Editorial Reviews

The main claim to fame of the Lanterns, besides the hit 1969 single 'Shame Shame,' was the inclusion of future stars, Albert Hammond & Black Sabbath' lead vocalist Ozzy Osborne. Over the course of the band's career between 1968-1971 the Magic Lanterns released three albums in their native UK with only one being released in North America (on the Atlantic label). This collection contains highlights from all three albums including the hit 'Shame Shame' from the album of the same name & the only album to contain Ozzy as a band member. Includes eight non-LP tracks, 'Melt All Your Troubles Away', 'If You Don't Know Me By Now', 'Country Woman', 'I Don't Wanna Go To Sleep Again', 'Stand For Your Rights', 'Caught In The Act', & 'You Ring A Bell'. BR Records. 1995. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars British Invasion Tail-End Charlies, August 9, 2007
By
AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shame Shame (Audio CD)
The Magic Lanterns from the U.K. - vocalist Jimmy Bilsbury, guitarists Alistair Beveridge and Paul Garner, bassist Mike Osbourne, and drummer Paul Ward - came in on the tail-end of the mid-1960s British Invasion, and their stay on the North American charts in that decade was a brief one.

Atlantic handled their late 1968 release - Shame, Shame - which became a modest hit, reaching # 28 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in December b/w Baby, I Gotta Go Now, one of two B-sides left out of this Collectables compilation in favour of - what? There are at least six weak selections here, any two of which could have been replaced by those missing sides.

In 1970 Atlantic also released One Night Stand, but it failed to register that year. The following year Big Tree re-released it, and this time it staggered to a # 74 Hot 100 in February b/w Frisco Annie. Both sides are included here. After another long spell they resurfaced with the small Charisma label in mid-1972 as The Magic Lantern and saw Country Woman top out at # 88 Hot 100 in July b/w Pa Bradley. That is the other missing flipside.

Seems to me that, if you are going to put together an 18-track CD for sale in North America the least you can do is include the six sides that most here might recognize. Instead, we are presented with an unremarkable compilation covering an equally-unremarkable group, and although the sound quality is not to be described as superb, it's fine (except for the audiophile purists).

3.0 out of 5 stars Magic Lanterns - 'Shame Shame' (BR Music), October 29, 2004
This review is from: Shame Shame (Audio CD)
Of all the various sources that I've been informed that this was Ozzy's pre-Sabbath band,I've heard it DIRECT from a rep. at the label,BR Music that Ozzy was never with the Lanterns. The Magic Lanterns existed only from 1968-71 and put out three decent lp's that combined elements of soul and innocent-sounding pop.The Manchester,UK band managed to score a decently received hit,"Shame Shame",but the tune really isn't their best,by any means. With a total of twenty-four tracks, the ones that I dug the most were "Another Place Another Time","Frisco Annie",the soulful "Let The Sunshine In","Carolina Brown","Country Woman","Never Gonna Trust My Heart Again" and their should've-been-a-hit "Highway Dreams".The disc gets better as it progresses. Two similar classic lp's:Beach Boys-'Today' and the Buckinghams-'Kind Of A Drag'.

This is a great album It's called "Shame Shame" and if you're looking for the same type of pop rock that sounds a little like the Grass Roots, Then you'll like The Magic Lantern. It also features Ozzy Ozborne and Albert Hammond and a has some great pop tunes. In addition to "Shame Shame", there's another very minor but great hit called "Country Woman", another great track is "One Night Stand" which Atlantic released as a single, which did very little. Well, I loved this little album, It was a little expensive, but for me it was worth it. Amazon seems to be getting a better supple of these little gems from the 60's and 70's.
