This is the sound of these tracks reaching their full potential,
This review is from: Shame (Audio CD)
The first time I heard this single was in 1992. I was bored in my dorm room (redundant, yes) and called WRCT at CMU in Pittsburgh to request "some Nitzer Ebb." I knew the DJ indrectly and happened to know he would rather spend ten bucks on a Nitzer Ebb CD single than on food. He played the "Captivate" from this CD and it blew me away. And that I was playing Wolfenstein 3D to it made it sound all the better.
"Captivate" and "Shame" are much harder here than the album versions. They mixed the album for easy listening and this single for the sweating, writhing, dollar-draft dance floor. These takes exuded the menace and aggression that Belief strove for but only managed to hit during the latter half of "Control I'm Here." Get this to hear how the album should have sounded. BUT... the real highlight is "Backlash." In fact, it is my favorite N.E. track of all time. Better than "Murderous," better than "Lightning Man." It teases you for the first 50 seconds and then drills you to the floor with a thumpin' bass groove. All the flanging and weird sound effects (breaking glass, processed vocals, random noises, jarring audio clips) make this N. E. at their most creative. It's not industrial like they were, it's not pop like they would become, but it's fascinating, and it's a high water mark of their work with Mark Ellis, a.k.a. "the Great Flood" (as he is credited here).

This was the second Nitzer Ebb single that I bought at Bleeker Bob's in Hollywood in 1989.
I love this single. Shame and Captivate are awesome songs, and Backlash is a really cool flipside.

Ah, bought this single along with the Lightningman single at Vinyl Fetish in Hollywood in 1989. I walked out of the shop, standing on the corner of Melrose and Poinsettia and that's where I met my wife, driving by with her sister and her friend. We've been together ever since.
So if this single gets a little nostalgic to me, then you can understand why. This is a great version of Shame. A few added lyrics, and a great exteded remix. Captivate is a very strong song, and could have easily been the single instead of Shame. A really cool remix. Backlash is a really cool drum/bass song. Well worth the money.

Although this single has only 3 tracks, it is well worth the money; all three are outstanding!
