5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent movie about class and gender in a small town, June 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shame [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Sure it's got a motorcycle riding heroine who wears leather, but the best thing about Shame is the accurate portrayals of working-class people in a company town and their powerlessness to prevent the son of the factory owner and his friends from assaulting the women and girls of the town. It also deals with self-defense and self-respect-not just for the women of the town, but also the men who feel powerless to prevent the violence. Turn up the volume because the accents are thick, but this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Don't even bother to watch Shame II, as usual, the US film industry turned a great heroine into a caricature.

3.0 out of 5 stars Aussie Drama, November 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shame [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie is about the "shame" that is placed on a female and her family after being raped or sexually assualted by a group of young males. Deborah-Lee Furness plays a moterbike riding barrister who arrives in town to witness the brutality and helps one young girl recover from an assualt and makes the towns people understand that its not right to force this "shame" onto people. Rated NRC (12+) in Australia but R (18+) in the US.

3.0 out of 5 stars Powerful female Aussie Shane, June 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shame [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I saw this movie years ago and recently rewatched it. It's an Aussie version of Shane with a female heroine, riding into town to free the townsfolk from the bad local boys who ride roughshod over everyone. It deals with the macho image of Aussies, small town silence, and violence. When the heroine lets loose finally, it's hard not to get revved up. Much better than the US remake.
