Book Description

November 28, 2007
Catherine Saint is a rock photojournalist whose New York life includes shoots for Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone, concerts, parties, and intimate friendships with the world's top entertainers. Through grit, luck, and soulful talent, she's finally made her dreams come true - until she discovers she is in mortal danger. As the menace and suspense intensify, she begins to view the people in her life through a different lens: from her sexy financier lover to her trusted lawyer, who is the agent for a hot new rock group fronted by a self-destructing lead singer; from her old shrink who won't go away to her dearest friend, a beautiful rock icon. Peopled with music-world characters from the sixties to the present, SHAMELESS is laced with the rhythm and imagery of Collins' most lyrical song-writing...and is a novel only she could create.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Singer, songwriter, political activist, UNICEF spokeswoman and actress Collins makes her debut as a novelist with this lackluster thriller set in the glamorous world of rock and roll. Narrator Catherine Saint has come a long way from her family farm in Kansas. A groupie turned freelance writer turned photographer, she is now a successful photojournalist with a fat bank account, a passionate lover and numerous famous friends and high-placed acquaintances. Soon after she hires an assistant to organize her schedule and pay her bills, however, Catherine finds herself knee-deep in trouble. She learns that her lover is having an affair, that her favorite band is having problems with drugs, that her former psychiatrist (who once raped her) is back on the scene?and that someone may want to kill her. With all her friends as suspects, Catherine struggles to keep herself together?and breathing?as she tries to achieve solid ground. Collins delivers some of what readers will expect (e.g., an inside look at the music industry), but much of the rest, including an engrossing plot, lies hidden deep within the jumbled ramblings of Catherine's dreams and of her obsessions with sex, drugs and rock and roll. From Library Journal

Folksinger Collins is noted for her wonderful voice, but is she as handy with a pen as she is with a microphone? In her first novel, a rock'n'roll photojournalist is stalked by a killer. Atlantic Records plans to release Collins's Shameless music CD simultaneously.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice summer read but not great fiction, April 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Shameless (Hardcover)
A fun read for Judy Collins fans, this novel looks behind the scenes of the music business and finds intrigue. Not great (or even very good) fiction, but at times poetic. The dream/flashback sequences tell a more interesting tale than the primary story. Collins' best-selling autobiographies ("Trust Your Heart" and "Singing Lessons") are more worthwhile.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to get through, May 4, 2008
This review is from: Shameless (Paperback)
Ordered this book a while ago and finally got to read it.....Disappointing and hard to put my finger on the problem with this book, but I guess that the main thing was that I just didn't care about the characters....They had no soul and no depth and the story never really came together for me and what was worse was that when you finally got to the end it was just a huge summary with no basis......

2.0 out of 5 stars Kinda Boring, April 16, 1999

This review is from: Shameless (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was rather hard to get through, especially the dream sequences, which I eventually began to skip. Not much happened, other than name dropping, and the end was anticlimactic.
