Bold New Book Reveals Secrets to Business Success

Nice girls might finish last but it won't be long until brazen hussies rule the business world! So says marketing expert and author Marilyn Ross who makes no apology for her belief that it's time for the women entrepreneurs of this country to learn to "kick butt." We are pleased to be publishing this revolutionary book.

In her new book Shameless Marketing for Brazen HussiesTM: 307 Awesome Marketing Strategies for Savvy Entrepreneurs, Ross relates how women-owned firms are transforming the business culture of yesteryear. "Female entrepreneurs are already an acknowledged force fueling today's economic prosperity," she writes. "Women across America are discovering practical, profitable ways to make themselves uniquely competitive . Don't just compete create!" Ross herself is a successful entrepreneur who consults and speaks about marketing and promotion, and owns and operates a successful book marketing business.

As of 1999, there were 9.1 million women-owned businesses employing 27.5 million and boasting $3.6 trillion in sales. And by 2005, it is projected that 50 percent of all companies will be owned by women. Ross the award-winning author of 12 previous books hopes to fuel the creative fires in these "Sassy Lassies" with her guide's innovative and time-tested tips for successful business startup and improvement.

Women, Ross writes, have many qualities that translate beautifully into the business world: They are nurturing, emotionally supportive, good listeners, intuitive, have refined organizational skills, and are as "tenacious as a pit bull" when it comes to something that is important to them. Their only limitation is their own expectations.

In Shameless Marketing for Brazen HussiesTM, Ross offers strategies from the get-go of starting a business choosing a name, logo, site of operation to quick and easy marketing ideas (Telemarketing? Yes, Nice Girls Do touts one chapter), to media tips and the psychographics (formerly known as demographics) of potential customers. You name it, she addresses it.

This is not a recap of one woman's success story. Rather, Brazen Hussies shares accounts of the professional achievements of women in various walks of life with all types of businesses, from home-based to corporate. It gives simple, doable ideas for everyone, even the gender-secure man who is not afraid to bypass the occasional tongue-in-cheek testosterone-bashing verbiage in his pursuit for corporate success.

The book is helpfully divided into five sections with pertinent topics such as: "Empowering Marketing Maneuvers" and "Out of the Box Thinking," each with whimsically illustrated identifying chapters and beneficial sidebars and visuals many of which should be laminated and treasured for future inspiration. In the back of the book is an invaluable section of "Sources and Resources Packed With More Power Than a Protein Bar."

"This book is for new startups that need guidance on how to push the envelope all the way to the top," Ross emphasizes. It also offers a fresh perspective for veteran entrepreneurs and professionals.

Shameless Marketing for Brazen HussiesTM: 307Awesome Marketing Strategies for Savvy Entrepreneurs is a must-read that removes all of the reasons businesswomen use for not breaking through the glass ceiling of equal pay and opportunity.

More About the Author

Marilyn Ross is a self-publishing pioneer. Over the last three decades, she has helped thousands of authors sell millions of books through About Books, Inc., the company she and former husband Tom founded in 1977 and have since sold. Then Marilyn turned her energies toward championing authors, professionals, and small presses by founding Self-Publishing Resources.

Marilyn, an internationally acclaimed self-publishing authority, has been noted and quoted in U.S. News & World Report, Publishers Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, Writer's Digest, Bottom Line Personal, John Naisbitt's Trend Letter, Investor's Business Daily, Rocky Mountain News, the Denver Post, San Diego Union, Chicago Daily Herald, Phoenix Gazette, the New York Times, Newsweek, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among others. Entrepreneur magazine dubbed Marilyn a "trend tracker." Additionally, she has appeared on scores of radio and TV shows, including NPR's All Things Considered.

In 1996, Marilyn and Tom Ross launched an international nonprofit trade association for self-publishers, small presses, and assertive authors. Although they are no longer involved, under their leadership the Small Publishers Association of North America (SPAN) became the second largest such organization in the world.

She brings her invigorating style to her best-selling books The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing (5th edition now out), Jump Start Your Book Sales, and Shameless Marketing for Brazen Hussies. This energetic woman not only helps authors successfully write, publish, and market their own books and information products--she has written and self-published fifteen books of her own. Following the "success formula" she espouses, five of the books have been sold to major trade publishers.

Singled out for the Guerrilla Marketing Hall of Fame, she is also listed in numerous Who's Who directories. Marilyn has intimate knowledge of the joys and frustrations of being an author. Writing and publishing conference planners often call upon her as a speaker.

She divides her time between helping clients, dancing, enjoying nature, gardening, volunteering, spiritual study, travel, being playful, and nurturing her many friends. Contact her at marilyn@MarilynRoss.com.

Format: Paperback
Don't be deterred by the title and subtitle, nor by the sometimes overheated diction. (Initially, I was.) This book provides an abundance of practical strategies, tactics, and suggestions which can be of invaluable assistance to males as well as to females, to corporate marketing executives as well as to entrepreneurs. Without apologies, Ross has an in-your-face style. She wastes neither her time nor her reader's in getting to the point, nailing it, and then moving on to another point.
She organizes the material within six Parts:
I. Empowering Marketing Maneuvers
II. Illuminating Publicity Techniques for Femme Fatales and Grande Dames
Note: As I previously suggested, ignore the overheated diction.
III. "Out of the Box" Thinking -- Nontraditional Marketing
IV. Mission Possible -- Unstoppable Direct Marketing
V. Maximize Your Strengths -- More Gutsy Strategies for Wonder Women
NOTE: See previous "Note."
VI. Sources & Resources Packed With More Power Than a Protein Bar
She also includes a "Recommended Reading" section. Because other excellent books have been published since 2000, I presume to suggest several at the conclusion of this review.
Ross obviously favors a tone and diction in her writing which could perhaps (just perhaps) distract some readers from the fundamentally sound material she provides. She may seem playful at time but she is nonetheless quite serious about the importance of combining prudent speed with relentless determination to achieve what Jim Collins calls a BEHAG: a Big Hairy Audacious Goal. Only in recent years have women somehow overcome formidable barriers to achieve success in the business world, most of which were installed and then sustained by men.

Okay, the title's a scream but when you open it up you'll find Ross' book jam-packed full of ideas that if they don't get you a little excited, well, check your pulse. As someone who's worked in advertising copywriting, public relations, marketing research, strategic planning and done a lot of sales I have a fairly extensive library of marketing books. This one is top's on my list because it takes a subject that many women unfortunately shy away from and makes it fresh, fun, easily approachable and 100 percent rock solid. A must for any woman (or man) interested in de-mystifying the process of moving products and services from you to the happy end consumer.

Thank goodness Mrs. Ross finally gave us brazen hussies some credibility. I just wanted to let you know I have just finished "Shameless Marketing for Brazen Hussies" and have enjoyed it immensely. I've found value in every single chapter (especially the sidebars). Even after 15 years in small business administration I still found myself amazed at the information that has been included and spent a lot of time surfing the resources provided. Although I've visited and know of many of the sites listed, there were many that I had never heard of and that helped to provide me with in depth knowledge of other areas in small business I may not have dealt with in the past. This is definitely on my short list of books for women in business...

Absolutely necessary book for anyone who wants to market and promote their product. This book was soooo helpful to me that I recommend it to everyone I come across who is wishing to find fabulous websites, helpful hints and tips to save time and money, and absolutely necessary ideas for marketing. There just isn't another book as complete, except maybe Marilyn's other title, "The Complete Guide to Book Publishing"

I highly recommend this book! If you're a woman (or a man, for that matter!) in business, "Hussies" offers a nonstop stream of excellent, why-didn't-I-think-of-that ideas. Ross offers strategies from the get-go of starting a business--choosing a name, logo, site of operation-to quick and easy marketing ideas to media tips and the psychographics(formerly known as demographics) of potential customers.
Although Ross is a successful businesswoman, this book isn't a recap of her success story. What I really enjoyed about this book is that it includes accounts of the professional achievements of women in various professions in all types of businesses, from home-based to corporate. It gives simple, doable ideas for everyone.
The book is divided into sections that cover different areas of marketing, so it's not necessary to read the book from cover to cover. You can just pick a chapter when you need some inspiration. And get your highlighter ready because there are tons of web addresses listed in the book that are worth checking out.
If you're put off by the title (personally I find it to be clever and in keeping with Ross' quirky humor injected throughout the book), then don't buy this book. But then of course it may be your competitors who learn how to "kick butt" in the business world....
