This shampoo was recommended to me by a sales clerk at Whole Foods. I have very itchy scalp and dandruff that other non-medicated shampoos were not helping to alleviate. I wanted something natural and not full of Earth harming chemicals. I have to say that with the first application it worked fantastically. I did not itch and my hair did not come out dry or frizzy. 4.0 out of 5 stars Flake Off, October 22, 2010
Soaps and shampoos containing some pine tar can be helpful for skin problems due to the natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties inherent in pine tree saps. This shampoo is sometimes helpful with the itching and flaking due to dandruff, psoriasis, and eczema.

However, it should not be used more than once a week, since it can cause skin irritation. Also, it has a strong odor, as the other reviewer somewhat facetiously notes. I generally shampoo a second time and followup with a good quality conditioner with a more pleasant scent, after giving my hair a thorough scrub with my fingertips, massaging my entire scalp using the pine tar shampoo. If it works for you, you should see a marked improvement in itching and flaking, though flaking may be worse after the first use. Any increase in itching and redness means that you are allergic. In that case, discontinue use. If you do not see an end to flakes in a month, see a doctor about your scalp problems.

On a historical note, pine tar was one of the first commodities produced in the British colonies of the 1600s and 1700s that would become the United States of America in 1776. The anti=fungal and anti-bacterial qualities of pure pine tar helped to coat and preserve the hulls of ocean-going wooden sailing ships that first created a worldwide trade system.

I did end up returning the shampoo because the darned shampoo made my hair smell like truck stop beef jerky, and quite frankly I don't care for beef jerky. I thought the smell would go away once I dried my hair, but it did not. I will admit, though, that the smell wasn't quite as pungent. I'm a city girl, and I don't spend a lot of time in the woods, but the time I have spent in the woods I can honestly say that they did not smell like this horrendous shampoo. So, it works. Just watch out for the smell.

Yuck... Buy this product if you want to smell like a bon fire all day. I could even smell it after I showered the following day. The smell is very strong.

I saw this product on Amazon and its label denotes its good for psoriasis. I used it and it does help control it. I like the smell of it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, January 27, 2012

I never tried this product before and it turned out this is an amazing thing. I recommend it to everyone, except maybe who is really picky about the smell during its use. Afterwards the smell goes away almost completely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for cradle cap and dandruff, December 3, 2011

my child always had dandruff, or cradle cap when she was younger. I hated this condition, and this was recommended by a nurse. She is now 8 years old and is the only shampoo I will use, since when I tried others the situation resumes. I love this product and don't mind the smell, its a natural woodsy smell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very soft and inoffensive, November 23, 2011

Somewhat unintuitively, tar shampoos are very soft and do not dehydrate your skin as much as everything else. This one is that way too. The price is good, cleaning effect perfect, so I'm going to use it for a while. About the smell: it does smell, and not so much like pine, but more like some plastic. This is not this product's strong point, I must say, but otoh, the smell, while not quite pleasant, is not repulsive either, and more imporantly, it doesn't last. Half a hour after you used it, nothing's left of its smell, so I can live with it. I would say that Neutrogena T/Gel smells better (but it's coal tar, rather than pine, which, I think, is a bit noxious to your health). All in all, I'm glad I tried it out and I will stick to it for a while. I've been trying a lot of shampoos starting about a year ago, and so far I've found nothing better than this one -- mainly because they all parch your scalp. This one doesn't.

PS. Actually, I can see that the price even went down a bit since I bought it. A welcome step in this economy.

5.0 out of 5 stars like campfire smoke in a bottle, July 27, 2008
I really enjoy this stuff. From a utilitarian point of view it works great and requires only a little bit, as another reviewer mentioned. More importantly to me it has a natural smell that transports me to the woods even when I'm stuck in the city! Every time I shampoo for a few minutes I'm a kid again roaming the woods barefoot and making shelters in the pine forest, or standing beside my truck in the crisp dark before sun up, breaking up a handful of pine needles and rubbing myself down with them to cover my scent before a hunt. When I'm hunting that pleasent clean smell of pine lingers on me all season, and this shampoo does the same thing for me the rest of the year!

Have to use coal tar shampoo for scalp condition. Had some amazon gift certificates and thought I would give this a try. The off brand coal tar nutrigena does not smell good, but once I use my conditioner, all you can smell is conditioner. With this stuff, the smell was awful and conditioner could not cover it up. Tried it again and this time used regular shampoo afterwards and then conditioner. Did not take smell away. I am a Mississippi country girl; I have not smelled any pine like this and our "woods" smell nothing like this. If you are a girl, it is incredibly unlikely you will be able to tolerate the smell much less like it. If you are a guy and like girls, you may want to think about last sentence. Does product actually work on scalp problems it states - yes, it seemed to work fine, but I had to throw it away after second time of using it. Hard to rate b/c does work - settled on two stars cause what good is it if can't use it?

I was looking forward to using this shampoo, but what I received in the package is pine tar bath and shower gel! I don't think it is worth the trouble of returning this $10 item. Amazon, you fullfilled this ordered and I'm quite dissapointed!
