California golden boy and ex-polo player Adrian Reed journeys to Shanghai in 1931 to try and recover $1.5 million dollars that his father had contributed in support of the Chinese Revolutionmoney which lies unused in a Shanghai bank. Along the way he becomes involved with a deposed war lord, a wild ex-Marine, and a dancer who tangoes with an ape. This poor imitation of an Indiana Jones adventure is heavy on action and short on characterization. The novel's strong point is it's colorful and vivid image of Shanghai. The political situation in China, which figures greatly in this novel, is not presented clearly and can be confusing; the reader needs an encyclopedia to fill in some historical background.
