5.0 out of 5 stars Bright and swinging African Jazz, May 15, 2011

Although asked by many of the great names, he preferred to stay in Africa and give the new generations a chance for music by his lead there. A man of principle and great social senses.

On this CD you will hear how nice and original his sound is. The typical african-jazz-beat is there and the touch of PK too.., something extra and special, a swing of joy... Listening to SHANGO makes you wonder what would have happened if he had been gone on tour with those names indeed.. Receiving the influences of the world by attending the jazz-festivals and sessions, talking, interacting and travelling for years with other artists from around the globe and maybe later on his own, what would he have brought to us and to the devellopment of jazz..? It didn't happen. This one is a one-time-only CD, happens sometimes, a very talented artist bringing-out only one promissing international marvell..

Just take a listening-in, see what you think. Those whom have received lessons from him there in Africa, could learn from- and listen to- Peter King, they were very lucky!!

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent, March 21, 2010

Say African music and you think of Paul Simon or David Byrne, beating drums and loping OMMBA vocals.

But in the 1970s, African music was actually not that far from American funk. There is a fantastic comp called Afro Rock 1 you really have to snap up, if you want to go overseas or just like funk

And than there is this. There are only really a few features that sound different than American funk on Peter Kings Shango (Shaungo is how he says it): the horns and guitar are more upfront, and of course, the singing accents are African

But this works as well and funks even harder than any James Brown record, and is some of the most low down, genuine music out there. If you even like to move your hips a half inch, you gotta do it to this,'

Leave all the nasty comments you like. Sorry babies: I just got the last affordable copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Instantly a favourite!, October 20, 2007

As a jazz fan, saturated on reggae, I was looking for something new and this is an excellent find! I listened to this for about 30 seconds before recognizing a classic. A full play at home and I'm very happy!

Great afro beats, loaded with James Brown-ish guitar rifs and baselines that would do Bootsie Collins proud. Absolutely solid jazz-funk with an african theme! WOW!
