For once a Greatest Hits album worth having,
By Music Lover (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shania Twain - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I normally don't buy greatest hits albums from artists that I already own the albums for but I had to make an exception in this case. 20 different songs (there are 2 versions of Party For Two making the complete 21 song cd) is what I'd call a complete cd. Normally artists take their 10-12 biggest songs plus one new song and call it a greatest hits album. Amazingly enough a year or so later they put out a second greatest hits album that you have to pay another $15 for to have the complete hits collection. You have to respect Shania for giving us, the fans, a great value for our money. I would recommend this album to anyone interested in getting a Shania cd as every song is a gem. For those curious, both of the version of Party For Two are great. I won't try to describe them as I'll trip over myself. Whether or not you have all of Shania's albums or not, pick this one up as either way, you get what you pay for: all of her best songs in one place.

Most greatest hits collections go in chronological order from oldest to newest. It's different how Shania's Greatest hits disc starts with those from her newest CD (UP!) and go backwards in her career to the Woman in Me days, and then wrapping up with the previously unreleased songs. This is a great CD to listen to out on my boat on a sunny day. I'm mostly a really big fan of the upbeat songs like "You Win My Love", "That Don't Impress Me Much", "Who's Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" and "Up", but no one sings a ballad quite like Shania, especially "Forever and Always" and "From This Moment". There's definitely not a weak song in the bunch, I like both versions of "Party for Two", it makes me wanna dance and sing. Excellent collection for sure

Great Hits collection, although missing quite a few.,

While I must say the entire album is 5 star material, I'm still feeling a bit odd having a Shania Greatest Hits album; afterall, whenever I've bought one of her albums, it always felt like a Greatest Hits compilation given the number of singles released + fan favorites not released. She truly is a great artist.
One note I must make is that while I had always hoped for a Hits cd, I was hoping it wouldn't come until after her next album. But instead, this one comes a bit early of that and on the downside, also fails to showcase any of her debut album, which I never had plans on buying in hopes that a GH album would showcase it. Afterall, the debut was always thought of as "obsolete" compared to the albums that followed and only worth the singles. Why aren't they here? "What Made You Say That" and "Dance With The One That Brought You" are only 2 tracks. Nonetheless, the album is simply stunning and features 4 new tracks to go in addition to any fan's collection. "Party For Two" is possibly one of Shania's all-time greatest (although my favorite single by her, "When You Kiss Me," was ommitted..hmm...) and the other new tracks sound great as well. And to those that say outside the 4 new tracks everything is what they already have on their albums: WRONG. The cd opens up with the POP RADIO MIX of "Forever And For Always," which is edited differently from any of its (3) album versions. Following it comes the video version of IGGG, which sounds somewhere inbetween the country & pop LP versions, but was never exactly released. Also not on her other albums are this albums versions of "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "From This Moment." "That Don't" comes in the form of a dance mix, while FTM comes in its SOLO (rather than duet) form, and rather than being in the pop mix of THAT that's found on the International Version, it comes with something different to the beat. This album isn't exactly going to "steal your money" or make "all the other Shania albums obsolete" or anything, with it having 8 tracks that don't appear on her other albums, and it missing several of her singles. Megahits "She's Not Just A Pretty Face," "God Bless The Child," "You Got A Way," "Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore," and "Ka-Ching!" don't make any appearances here, and neither do the flop singles "When You Kiss Me," "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing," or "Thank You Baby!". Buy it, you won't regret it. If that doesn't help you make your decision, the artwork has lots of new pictures of her, PLUS the lyrics to every one of the songs included and a picture from each video with it. Oh, and did I mention it comes with a $5 coupon for the Scent Stories player? =D

Shania Twain is one of the best female singers around. This CD has most of her hits. My favorite song is Man! I feel like a Woman. This song really rocks and gets me going. Another highlight track for me is the song That Don't Impress Me Much. I love the lyrics to this song very much, because I think what really matters is a person's personality and character and not what they have in terms of material possessions. I also like the song I'm Going Getcha You Good too from the smash album UP.
Shania Twain sings the best love songs. I especially enjoy the songs You're Still The One, and At This Moment. These are very beautiful songs that were big hits on both the country and pop charts. Shania's voice is heartfelt and sincere on her love songs. I think that is part of her huge appeal. Shania sings a new duet entitled Party for Two with newcomer Billy Currington on this album. This is a very playful and flirty song that I loved. She also sings this song with Sugar Ray front man Mark McGrath. I enjoyed both versions of this song. The song Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under is a real crowd pleaser at her concerts. It is a very lively song that gets the audience on their feet. This CD is an excellent greatest hits album. I recommend this CD to anyone who loves good music.

It's hard to believe that after 10 years and 4 albums it's already time for a greatest hits package from the greatest female entertainer of all-time. The only down side is that she has so many hits she can't fit all of them on the album.
Most of us know all her hit songs like "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!," and "Forever And For Always," but what's great about this collection is that we get mixes either not available before or hard to find, like radio versions of "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" and "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!," and the pop/world mix of "That Don't Impress Me Much." The collection icludes "Any Man Of Mine," the best country song of all-time, in my opinion, and "You're Still The One" and "From This Moment On," Shania's most famous ballads that are staples at weddings everywhere, without the spoken intros featured on the "Come On Over" album. Finally, we get three brand new songs. There is a country and pop version of "Party For Two" with Billy Currington and Mark McGrath. I personally like the country version better but they're both great. "I Ain't No Quitter" is a fun, cheeky, twangy swing number that's probably the most country song she's ever done. Finally, the highlight of the new material is a very powerful and deep ballad titled "Don't!" This is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time.

This review is from: Shania Twain - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
With nearly a decade of million-selling hits under her belt, Country music sensation Shania Twain has finally released a definitive 'Greatest Hits' disc.
Nearly all of Shania's biggest and best-known songs are included here featuring "Man, I Feel Like A Woman", "From This Moment On", "You're Still The One", "Any Man Of Mine", "Up" and "That Don't Impress Me Much". Also included on the disc are three brand new tracks. The new hit "Party For Two" is presented in two versions. The first version is in a driving dance/rock style and features Shania duetting with Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath. The second version is in the more typical Shania country style and features Billy Currington duetting. The other two new tracks are the tender ballad "Don't" and the dirt-kicking country twang of "I Ain't No Quitter". With all the hits that Shania Twain has had over the past decade, her "Greatest Hits" CD is a sure-fire winner. Every track on this disc brings back special memories and is full of upbeat liveliness. This is definitely one great collection from a very talented entertainer. And of course, we cannot forget the songwriting and production talents of hubby Mutt Lange who brought this music to its full potential. This CD proves that the Twain/Lange collaboration is truly a winning combination.

Shania Twain - Greatest Hits,

This review is from: Shania Twain - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Who is Shania Twain? .....for those of you whe were living under a rock during the mid to late 90's, she is the female who re-defined country music for the better good with a breath of fresh air, a unique style, exceptional songwriting, attitude, strong independent character and a versitile musical arrangement along with rock solid production. ...oh and she is one of the most successful artists in history, her "Come On Over" album is the biggest selling album EVER by a female artist and the 5th or so biggest selling album of all time. It is basically the female equivalent of Thriller!
Shania writes all of her own songs and melodies on guitar and does a wonderful job singing them. But not only that, she earned her way to stardom by growing up extremely poor, having her birth father walk out on her at a young age, singing in bars at night from the age of 8, losing BOTH her parents in a car accident at 21 and having to cut her chances of having a musical career short to parent her younger sibelings while singing at a resort to pay the bills, so she has truly payed her dues. Now that Shania has finally released her Greatest Hits album, you can have all her greatest songs on 1 CD! Admittedly, I could list a whole other CD's worth of great Shania songs which were left off but this is still a mighty strong collection and gives you a good idea of who Shania is as an artist and a person and I would definitily recommend looking into her other albums also. Forever and For Always: 10/10 - Lovely, breezy ballad, my favorite Shania song! Beautiful lyrics, excellent melody, and Shania shows off great vocal range without going over the top like certain other female artists. I'm Gonna Getcha Good: 9/10 - The more rock side of Shania! Very sassy, infectious lyrics and great beat...Shania will "Getcha Good" with this song! UP!: 9/10 - If this song doesn't Up! your mood then nothing will. Come On Over: 9/10 - Nice unique sound...great beat and an admirable display of Shania's great personality. Man! I Feel Like A Woman!: 10/10 - One of Shania's trademark songs. Shania just nails it with her attitude and charisma! Great lyrics, great guitar riffs, great guitar solo, great song! That Don't Impress Me Much: 10/10 - Another of Shania's trademark songs. Great song about what a woman wants in a guy. More then just good looks, cars and all that other fancy crap, it takes something deeper then that to impress Shania! From This Moment On: 10/10 - Ok, everything about this song is just pure excellence! THE ultimate love song. Epic ballad about true love, almost haunting at how beautiful it is....gorgeous vocals and killer guitar solo! Honey, I'm Home: 9/10 - The more country side of Shania. Great fiddles and interesting lyrics. You're Still The One: 10/10 - Another of Shania's trademark songs. Beautiful ballad about beating the odds and true love. Don't Be Stupid: 9/10 - Great song about trust. Killer beat and awesome fiddles. Love Gets Me Every Time: 8/10 - Nice song about unexpectedly falling in love. Another display of Shania's country side. No One Needs To Know: 9/10 - Great country song with catchy lyrics. You Win My Love: 8/10 - Good song with some nice riffs! I'm Outta Here: 9/10 - Excellent statement about being in a relationship for love otherwise "I'm Outta Here"! The Woman In Me: 10/10 - Really intimate ballad! Magical! Any Man Of Mine: 10/10 - Shania's breakthrough and arguably best country song, excellent attitude and lyrics! Whose Bed Have Your Boots: 9/10 - Great tongue in cheek country song about adultery. Party for Two (with Mark McGrath): 7/10 - Not bad, although I prefere the version with Billy Currington. Don't!: 9.5/10 - Haunting ballad about forgiveness. Party for Two (with Billy Currington): 10/10 - Excellent beat and extremely catchey lyrics! Really fun! I Ain't No Quitter: 8/10 - One of those songs you'll probably either love or hate. Really country/swing sounding, a real grower.

Ain't No Quitter Here,
By Sarah Hawkins (Atlanta, Ga, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shania Twain - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Shania is one of the greatest artists of the modern day, she's the mastermind behind the biggest-selling album of all time by a female artist, the highest selling country album of all-time, tied with AC/DC's "Back In Black" for the sixth highest selling album ever, and she's the only artist to have three consecutive diamond albums.
With all that aside, she's still one of the greatest songwriters and performers ever. Her live show can not be beat and her songs are always catchy and relevant to one's life. This album contains all of her biggest hits from "The Woman In Me", "Come On Over", and "Up!", plus it has three new songs on it. The album goes in reverse chronological order (I'm sure there's an actual term for that), starting with the song "Forever and For Always" which is a very meaningful and beautiful song about love lasting forever. It goes straight into "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" which was her comeback single in 2002, and she surely got us ALL good with that song. "Up!" is next and it's just a fun, tongue-in-cheek kind of song. Very Shaniaesque. Following the "Up!" songs are the ones from "Come On Over", including "You're Still The One", "That Don't Impress Me Much", and "From This Moment On" -- all of which were huge hits in the states and Internationally. "Man! I Feel Like A Woman", "Honey, I'm Home" and "Don't Be Stupid! (You Know I Love You)", which are three of her best songs to perform live are also included. It also includes "Love Gets Me Every Time" and "Come On Over"... now, you have to understand that "Come On Over" is my favorite CD of all time, so I could go on and on about it. After we go through her biggest selling album, we find some of the true gems. The songs that weren't completely overpolished and sound really homey. "No One Needs To Know" has a kind of stripped down acoustic feel to it. A nice change of pace from the previous tracks on here. After that we run into "You Win My Love" which was a HUGE hit for Shania, and is probably the most rock-influenced song on "The Woman In Me", which should come as no surprise since it was written by her husband/producer Mutt Lange. Then you hit "I'm Outta Here!" which is another great live song from Shania. With a fun beat and awesome lyrics, it's no wonder this was such a big hit for her with fans. After that you come into "The Woman In Me" which is one of Shania's slowest, but most beautiful songs. This is such an emotional song and Shania sings it magnificently. After that you hit two of Shania's biggest-known songs with fans, "Any Man Of Mine" and "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" - I know some people who aren't Shania fans, but they like at least one of those two songs. And who can't? They're awesome country tunes with a bit of rock that really pulls the entire Shaniaesque attitude together. Now we've got the three (technically four) new songs from Shania... my personal favorite of these is "Don't!" which is such an emotional ballad about a relationship that needs some mending. It could possibly be one of Shania's best songs ever. "Party for Two" is the newest single from Shania, and it comes in a pop and country version to better suit her fans. The pop version is with Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath, he has a unique vocal styling, but I'm not too sure that it completely fits with the song. The awesome beat makes up for it though. On the country version, Shania teams up with Billy Currington, a country newcomer with a southern sexy voice fit PERFECTLY for the track. It's too bad the song is somewhat poorly written. Fun song, but it's also weak. Closing off the entire album is "I Ain't No Quitter" which is one of the most unique and different songs Shania has ever put out. It has a country-swing beat that puts you in the feel of an old western club almost. An awesomely written song about a guy not quitting his bad habits "He drinks, he smokes, he cuts, he swears, and he tells bad jokes...", but the girl in the song is stubborn and isn't giving up on him either. Very well done. This is a must-have for any music fan, period. No matter what your tastes are, you'll love this 21 track mega-disc that's destined to put a smile on your face.

This Sure Impresses Me Much,
By Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shania Twain - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Shania Twain has always been one of my favourite artists. No one in Britain (including myself) really knew who she was until she released the international version of the now-classic "That Don't Impress Me Much" in May 1999, but since then she has gone on to become of our country's best loved singers. Shania is the artist who single-handily perfected the pop/country crossover. And it was a perfect crossover: her third album "Come On Over" was released in late 1997 and by early 2000 had sold a staggering 36 million copies worldwide to become the biggest selling album by a female recording artist in history. This album is still a huge seller and will no doubt cross the 40 million sales mark over the next few years. As an album it has classic status in the industry, and this fact alone will keep it selling for years.
It's rather unusual to see Shania as the world's biggest selling female artist, but that's pretty much what she is. She's not just a singer, but a remarkable entertainer as well. If you didn't know your facts you'd probably say Madonna or Mariah Carey had the biggest selling female album ever, but nope, Shania does! The reason for this is that she appeals to such a wide audience: kids, adults and even grandparents. She's one of America's sweethearts in that she's not going to release an inaccessible alternative record or let her boob 'accidentally' fall out on stage, and I think if the artist is honest about that then they deserve respect. Shania and her husband write simple pop songs with catchy hooks and foot-tapping melodies and they don't pretend to be anything else. This has led a lot of critics to dismiss Shania's music as simply elevator music, and maybe it is, but so what? I for one love intelligent and thought-provoking music, but too much is never good. You have to have variety! That's where an artist like Shania steps in. So if you're looking for a great hits album with light pop music that doesn't weigh heavy on the cerebral cortex, then Shania's "Greatest Hits" is a must-own. The material on the album is arranged by studio album, with a chunk of songs from one album filling the first few tracks, then the singles from another album following this, and so on. Shania's 2002 album Up! is the focus of this album's first three tracks. "Forever And For Always," "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" and "Up!" are the first three tracks and were all pretty big worldwide hits. Then we get the selection of Shania's biggest hits, all from the Come On Over album. There are a total of eight songs here from that mammoth album, and they are "Come On Over," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" That Don't Impress Me Much," "From This Moment On," "Honey, I'm Home," "You're Still The One," "Don't Be Stupid" and "Love Gets Me Every Time." The reason so many songs were released from this album is that certain songs were released in certain countries, such was the universal appeal of this album. I personally love all of them. The reason for me buying this album comes next, and in the form of the six singles from the album "The Woman In Me." This was Shania's 1995 hit album and the songs from it on this hits collection are "No One Needs To Know," "You Win My Love," "I'm Outta Here," "The Woman In Me," "Any Man Of Mine" and "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" These songs definitely possess a more country feel to them, as Shania gradually broke away from the country sound with each studio album. There are also four brand new songs on this album, in the form of "Party For Two" with Mark McGrath, "Don't!" "Party For Two" with Billy Currington and "I Ain't No Quitter." I'm not really fond of these new tracks, probably because I've become so accustomed to the real classics on this album. However, they make for a nice addition. OVERALL GRADE: 9/10 Shania's Greatest Hits was a worthy purchase for me, as European fans will probably only have the International release of Come On Over which came out in 1999. The US version of the album is more country-fied than the European version, so for me to hear some of the songs from that album in their original format was interesting. However, I think I prefer the International versions. Also, a lot of the songs have been edited which was obviously so that the record company could fit more songs onto the album (every album has an 80-minute maximum playing time). The inlay of the album could also have had more pages with more pictures of Shania, along with a Thank You list. However, when you look at the superb hits on this album, you realise it's not just a quick cash-in, and more of a celebration of one artist's tremendous success in the music industry.

Serves Up All the Memorable Classics and More,
This review is from: Shania Twain - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Although the titles of many of her hits reflect that Shania Twain may be a woman who is inclined to spontaneous fits of shouting, her "Greatest Hits" chronicles in a counter-clockwise motion her commercial breakthrough with her swashbuckling 1995 sophomore album "The Woman In Me" through to her present-day status as country pop's premiere feminist phenom.
Slinkily beginning with the biggest hit from 2002's multi-platinum, "Up!," "Forever and For Always" glistens as brightly as ever. The ideal sappy mainstream ballad has just enough punch to protect it from elevator muzak status, despite the fact that adult contemporary has played it to the point of excruciating superfluity. Its overexposure, however, has allowed radio programmers another option besides her mega-hits "You're Still the One" and "From This Moment On," from 1997's earth-shaking "Come On Over, recently certified 20x platinum between both its pop and country versions stateside. Initially having started out as little songs-that-could, both tunes can now be recited nearly verbatim by the majority of the population with even a slight knowledge of pop culture. Of course, the backbone of Twain's fame has been her in-your-face uptempo tracks with their strong themes of feel-good female empowerment. Who could ever forget the confident, sexy image of the singer/songwriter on her motorcycle in the video for the ever-catchy "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" video or the absolutely hilarious arena-ready rock of "That Don't Impress Me Much" complete with friendly jabs at Brad Pitt and rocket scientists. Did that song give you a good laugh? If so, you must check out the lesser-known hit "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" which good-naturedly plays off a stereotype of male infidelity. Although it misses out on including "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing" and other excellent tracks from "Up!" which surfaced on public radar, three new recordings make up for the loss. The gratifying if not slightly silly "Party For Two" is featured in two versions, one featuring Mark McGrath and the other Billy Currington, the latter being the superior. A pleasing warm-bath ballad and a twangy upbeat number come with "Don't!" and "I Ain't No Quitter" respectively. Both songs are leftovers from "Up!". Despite the fact that fellow artist Steve Earle called her the "highest paid lap dancer in Nashville," Shania Twain has confirmed herself a definitive household name with many memorable and classic hits synonymous with her name. "Greatest Hits" serves up every one of them and more. |
