Exellant history of Shaniko from beginning years to present,
By A Customer
This review is from: Shaniko People (Hardcover)
Helen has acomplished a remarkable true history of this remarkable town. My husband is a decendant of some of the early settlers and ranchers. I have met many of the decendants at the 1997 school reunion and shared their stories and pictures, many of which are in Helen's book's, "Shaniko" and "Shaniko People". I ran across the "Shaniko" book quite by accident sometime in the summer of 1984 or 1985 while passing thru Shaniko, sightseeng. All of our children have copies now as this is about their ancestors. This is about people of all nationalities coming together to settle a new town and working and living together.

This review is from: Shaniko People (Hardcover)
I purchased this book because I was doing genealogical research and found that there was an entire chapter written about my great grandmother and her family. While this is not the most well written book I have ever read, it is full of interesting information and was tremendously helpful to me in researching my family history. The woman who wrote it obviously had a passion for sharing the story of The Shaniko People and it is a genuinely pleasant read. It is full of information on the town, how it was founded, many of the families that lived there, and just general information that paints a vivid picture of what life must have been like in this little Oregon town. There are a lot of photos throughout the book and even some excerpts taken directly from the diary pages of a woman who lived there.
If you are interested in learning more about the town of Shaniko, I would highly recommend reading this book. It is a quick read and full of valuable information if you are researching your family roots in this area of Oregon. |
