Drunken Monk Delivers the Goods,

For those of you interested in a movie with a great storyline and heart pounding drama and suspense... look elsewhere. This movie is fun and its all about the great fight scenes. Absolute fantastic choreography and intense fight sequences make this movie an absolute must have for any MA fan. Gordon Liu is great and depicts the drunken fist style fairly acurately. For those reviewers that only gave this 1 or 2 stars, they obviously have no experience with kung fu films. Don't listen to them, they don't know what they're talking about. I own probably 40 kung fu flicks and this is definetly in the top 10. Up there with Shaolin Temple, Snake and Crane and Fearless Hyena. This one is a must have. Buy it today.

Gordon Liu + wine = a lot of injuries,

Gordon Liu is amazing in this tale of revenge. An amazing cast of characters, including a one-armed fighter, and a bad guy who masters in the mantis style. All though at times the flashbacks and storyline slow down the movie, the fights and action make up for it fully. I definately enjoyed this film, and I think that all kungfu collectors should go out and get it. A classic.

The plot doesn't make very much sense in this movie, but then again it doesn't try to. With that being said, I will go ahead and give you the reasons you should watch this and then the reasons why not.
Reasons why-great iron whip vs. gordon fight, great fight with gordon and guy with iron with without his whip, final fight scene. This is not a great movie my ANY means, but the jungfu is fun to watch and the commentary means you will watch it at least twice.

A return to classic martial arts.. but....,
By NomadLLama (Naperville, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shaolin Drunken Monk (DVD)
The Shaolin Drunken Monk (1983) starring Gordon Liu, a famous martial arts movie stars in asia, is meh...First, know that Gordon Liu came in the time a little after Bruce Lee. I do not believe that Gordon's movies ever made such acclaim as Bruce Lee did. This movie makes no sense whatsoever, but then again, old martial arts movies that are DUBBED never make any sense. you would hope that they would even include the original Cantonese soundtrack because its DVD, but no, it doesn't. Perhaps Mandarin or something would help just THAT MUCH. The story is bad, but that is seen from the English dubbed version. The fights are excellent. The dubbing adds to humor, but in actuallity, the movie is supposed to be of serious attitude. "Cam!" [insert dramatic, bad quality music) the picture quality and sound quality aren't that great. you can spend your money on something better. I would suggest "Shaolin Challenges Ninja" note: Gordon Liu was the martial arts champion (Number 1 Under the Heavens) in China. The other famous star like this is Jet Li

Everything in this movie is at it should, one might think other wise because one is not used to the certain aspect that ones would impose a flaw on. The only flaw is when Hwoangs assin throws the darts at Chao Lun, but thats not a biggie. This movie is enjoyed to its maximum potential on its third or fourth view, becuase you get used to its style aftet that.

The different facets of this title is beyond words. The choreography of the fight senses alone is enough to make the modest of martial arts enthusist screen locked. While the need for the camera play wasn't necessary, it isn't enough to warrent a pass on this other wise fabulos screen innovation...

Drunken Monkey at its Best,
By A Customer
This review is from: Shaolin Drunk Monk [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie has some incredible fight scenes. Gordon Liu learns kung-fu from his drunken master. Just watching Gordon Liu do Drunken Monkey makes this movie a must see! The only problem with this movie is it could have some better training scenes and more all-round action. Last battle is great.

A Classic from Gordon Liu and The Lau Brothers,

One would assume with Gordon Liu Chia Hui aka Lau Kar Fai in a movie directed by Lau Kar Leung (Director of Drunken Master 2) that the movie would be outstanding. Well you would be somewhat of the mark with your assumptions on this movie.Gordon Liu plays a man whose parents are brutally murdered when he was a child. As a child he too was left to drown as the local thugs tried to eliminate his entire family. Before he meets his demise, he is rescued and saved by an old drunken monk who raises him while being the meanest old monk on the planet. The monk teaches him kung fu and the "8 drunk gods technique". Gordon then decides to take his revenge. First he kidnaps the leaders daughter, who just happens to be an old childhood sweethart of his. When the daughter ends up missing, all hell breaks loose. The fights are choreographed over the top, however, this is clearly not the best from Gordon Liu or the Lau Brothers. Get it because it's a classic.

I'm surprised more people don't know about this notorious B-grade Gordon Liu classic. Where to begin? The English dubbing is atrocious, with most of the Limey actors who did the job sounding like they're either bored, drunk, or both. The plot is of the cliched, predictable kind that's been done in other kung fu B-movies countless times (i.e., hero gets revenge on bad guys for death of father). Most of the fight scenes are badly choreographed, plus you can see the wires in some shots. The treatment of women is awful (in one part of the movie, Gordon Liu kidnaps the daughter of the enemy who killed his father; he then ties her to a wooden pole in his hideout and then leaves her to pee in her pants). What I can't believe is that I don't hate this crap. In fact, I freakin' love it! This flick would probably be great to watch while you were fried or drunk too, especially when the bad guys do the "Dr. Evil" laugh.

See Drunken Master!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Shaolin Drunk Monk [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have got to say this is one of the sillier Fu flicks I've seen (and I've seen a few!). The fights are short and irrelevant, the "training" sequence is a bust, the villian and his kung-fu are weak, and the historical elements of Drunken Style & Shoalin are not even approached. Basically, every classic element of traditonal kung fu film is missing or very poorly done. Gorden Liu is a pretty tough and good in quite a few films, but he's not really given much to do in this cheapie. I mean, even for 70s Fu, the production values are horrid. Check out Drunken Master -- it is much, much, much better!
