4.0 out of 5 stars Some old funky soul...you never heard, August 30, 2001

This review is from: Shaolin Soul Vol.02 (Audio CD)
It's hard to go wrong with Al Green, the Jackson 5, and Teddy Pendergrass. However, the highlights on this album are the songs you could have sworn you've heard before. Some hook or rif sampled in a rap song. This is the essence of Shaolin Soul. My personal favorite on the album is "I got the blues" by Labi Siffre. It's opening beat was sampled by Jay-Z for "Streets is watchin'", some vocals were sampled by the intro on the Beatnuts "Musical Massacre", and most noticeable is the closing jam, which bar for bar is the beat to emenem's "high, my name is"; it truly is a mindblowing song. Other songs on the album are distinctly noticeable, sampled by Wu-Tang on 36 chambers, ironman, and cuban link. Other borrowers on this album are Brand Nubian, DJ Premiere, and Mathmatics.
Aside from its value as an "oh, that's where they got that from album", it is also a good selection of lesser known soul tracks that are a good listen all the way trough.
Shaolin Soul Vol.1 is also pretty good

Whether you're home chillin with a girl or simply loungin' about, Shaolin Soul is a good listen from beginning to end.
Smooth soul from back in the days and the source for alot of today's hip-hop hits. Don't sleep.....
