Pianist Katia Labeque is one of the most acclaimed classical musicians of our day. As well as her legions of fans across the globe, Katia's friends and admirers include Madonna, who cites her as, ' one of her favorite pianists in the world, ' to Miles Davis, who dedicated two songs to her on his 1985 album You're Under Arrest. In addition to Labeque's considerable success as one half of classical duo The Labeque Sisters, she has collaborated with artists as diverse as Sting, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Shape of My Heart is a fascinating album that brings together a selection of these collaborations alongside brand new recordings of Satie, Chopin and Radiohead. The album opens with Sting's 'Moon over Bourbon Street' and 'Shape of My Heart.' Here, the singer's bold emotion combines with Labeque's refined but assertive lyricism to excellent effect. Also of special note are piano duets with Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Labeque clearly enjoys the challenge of playing with three of jazz's finest practitioners and on these tracks Labeque proves beyond doubt that she is an adventurous, imaginative musician at the peak of her creativity.

I purchased this CD because, as Amazon clearly knows, I will want anything that includes Sting. I had previously known of this piano artist only as a member of a classical piano duo with her sister - often wondered what became of them as they disappeared off the scene some time ago. She is an accomplished and interesting pianist - interesting in that she is eager and willing to go beyond the "norm" and use her talent and keyboard expertise to investigate and explore the old and new in innovative ways. I enjoy her collaborations on this CD - it is very listenable, although not one of my great favorites in my collection. Nice to play occasionally, but does not especially move or excite me, which is what I am usually looking for in music listening.
