The Shape of Things by John Foxx and the Maths continues their colaborative creative efforts in mysterious ways around the most fascinating and greatest collection of analog synthesizers in existence. John Foxx vocals are still the most futuristic, and astonishingly wed to electronica in new and experimental ways on this album. And with all of his poetically musical work, and variety of collaborations, we see endlessly interesting themes elaborated upon, and the brilliant newness of creation.

I like this more and more as I listen to it. The sound alternates between a retro 80's electronic sound with a more ambient sound. My fave track is "Rearview Mirror" which would fit in nicely along side his early 80's Foxx catalog.

I bought both John Foxx & The Maths albums together but this newer effort feels more rushed, as though there was a deadline to meet and not enough finished material (like Numan's The Pleasure Principle). It has 16 tracks but many of them are just snippets, with some good songs around them. Whilst his solo efforts tend to the more ambient/ethereal, it seems that no matter who Foxx collaborates with, they always manage to make a John Foxx album. This is certainly no exception and has all the proper ingredients - excellent synth sounds, interesting rhythms and that inimitable vocal.

I've given this the same 4 star rating as Interplay but realistically this is probably a 4 and Interplay is worth 4.5 stars. They are quite similar, and a fine progression from earlier albums like From Trash, but this one doesn't work quite as well for me. Still, even an average John Foxx album is better than the best most other artists are capable of. And to think the man is 63 years old and still pumping out amazing, relevant music like this.

I was not aware until this release about these cool analog synth works with the Maths...
Brings back memories of the 1970s and all the great synthesis that was going on.
They have a knack for mixing catchy melodies and rhythms with fun production sounds.
Thanks, boys...
