Shaper's Veil by MC Chambers turned out to be a wonderful solution to my long days of airport/airline travel this weekend. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Fantasy Adventure, or who just likes a book that engages the imagination and the heart!

After the initial brainwork of sorting the exotic names and places, who was mortal and who was not, etc., the story quickly drew me into its own world and history. The author did a great job of unfolding a complex story of power struggles (both physical and mental), friendships and heroism worthy of any favorite epic. Just like the beautiful artwork on the cover, the story swirled with color and rich imagery so that I felt like I could actually "feel" and "see" as the characters did, whether it was in the coolness of ancient underground tunnels or flying in the sky at the edge of the world! I especially liked the use of animals with supernatural powers that helped the characters along the way. It was adult enough to keep me interested, but did not rely on sexual or violent content that would make it inappropriate for younger readers. One theme, using your personal fears to control the enemy that would desire that those same fears defeat you, was intriguing.

This is a book I will own for myself, because I want to read it again!

This fantasy is set in a world with richly imagined details. Steam barnacles, shadow cats, and the mysterious, evil Tappers are intriguiging. As with most of my favorite fantasy novels, the characters seemed almost more real than my own reality, and I looked forward to escaping with them into their adventures. Gydana, a healer who becomes heroic through tragedy and tenacity, and Kawi Shenmir, the hawk-man, are strong, yet fragile. Add an evil king, an intelligent princess, an unlikely prince, war, imprisonment, freedom, and good inevitably clashes with the not-so-good. The musical themes were particularly interesting, even more so because they were menacing. I look forward to Gydana's next adventure and immersing myself in this world again.

I have Shaper's Veil on my Kindle. I don't normally read fantasy stories but this book was recommended to me and once I got into the characters it was impossible to put down. I like books that have a lot of layers and depth to them and this one does. Kawi is a strong character belonging to two worlds and very conflicted. There were twists and turns throughout the book and was I pleased that the ending was not predictable. It was well worth getting invested with the characters and am looking forward to reading it again.

I'm always on the lookout for well-told tales to read during business trips, and I found a good one in Shapers' Veil. With well-developed characters and more surprises than you might expect in a fantasy adventure, it will keep you turning the pages.
M.C. Chambers does a good job with the main characters, and there is always the feeling of impending danger in the background, erupting on occasion into full-blown chaos. Just when things seem to be in hand, the story turns, and new concerns must be dealt with.
Like most authors today, M.C. Chambers leaves room for followup stories, and I'd gladly pick up the next story of Kawi Shenmir and and the mysterious Shapers.
