Review

This entry in the Spot the Shape series is a near-perfect union of concept and execution. Using the vibrant photography and clarion text that has become the trademark of Heinemanns Acorn books, Rissman lays out a simple premise (""Shapes are all around us --Booklist

There are many different shapes around us and many of those we can find in sports activities, equipment and sports fields. Some of the shapes we can find are the rectangle, circle, triangle, square, semicircle, diamond and oval. For example when you look at a baseball field from above you can easily see a few different shapes. If you happen to be at a race car event and the flagman gives the checkered flags to the winner you are looking at several black and white squares. If you enjoy track and field you may have seen the rectangular long jump sandpit. In this book you will see pictures of other items such as a football, a woman posing in the shape of a triangle, a kayak, a hockey goal area, bicycle wheels, and a tennis court.

This is a nice little book for learning seven basic geometric shapes in a fun and easy manner. If you want to teach a youngster a bit of geometry the easy way, high interest books such as this one are a great help. There is one sentence beneath each photograph. Most of the words can be figured out by the confident reader, but some children could use a bit of assistance with words like kayak or semicircle. I liked the vibrant photographs and the sports theme. In the back of the book is a recap section with all the basic shapes, a picture glossary (the kayak), an index and a few recommended activities to use in the homeschool or classroom setting. This is one of six in the "Spot the Shape" series.
