I've read a fair amount about Kennedy and found hardly anything offensive in this series that would render it a smear job on any level.

Let's start with the obvious controversies:

Kennedy's many dalliances are the stuff of legend now and the drama addressed continued infidelities without making them the focus of the mini-series. Kennedy played around, he married for political ambition, but few don't already know this. Did he love his wife on some level? Perhaps, but again, the topic was treated with respect.

The Marylin Monroe episode, while also the stuff of legend, was addressed head on, although the juxtaposition of her suicide and her "break up" with Kennedy suggests the president's alienation of the actress contributed to her downfall. An interesting take on her death, to be sure, although one left to speculation, but hardly proving anything.

Joe Kennedy's connections with the mafia were down-played significantly in this series. Giancana and Joe went way back, and the scene where the elder Kennedy goes to Giancana for support for Jack's 1960 election seemed superficial at best. Giancana and the mob played a role in helping Jack get elected (although with 303 electoral votes, and Illinois only counting for 27 of them, Kennedy would have won without his Chicago connection). In any case, I fail to see how this is a smear job. Rather, the producers were showing real respect to the family by treating the episode with the mob-ties so lightly.

The persistent stories that Joe Kennedy's financing mafia and teamster related activities, something that was only vaguely hinted at at times, was overlooked, as well.

Overall, the actors do look like their real-life counterparts and are fairly convincing as the Kennedy family. However, as others have noted, there are factual inaccuracies in The Kennedys and the series seems to rush at the end. I tend to be forgiving about minor factual inaccuracies if they are necessary to further the movie or appeal to a wider audience. However, The Kennedys makes a bit mistake by totally ignoring Ted Kennedy. It's as if Jack and Bobby didn't have a younger brother! I understand the producers wanted to fit the series into 8 episodes, but to leave Teddy Kennedy out completely? I like the idea of a TV mini-series about the Kennedys, but it should be done right and give due attention to all three of the brothers.

In one of the most patently absurd manufactured controversies of this or any year, the History Channel commissioned this dramatized portrait of the Kennedy clan and then bowed to outside pressure not to air it. Other networks soon passed on the finished product, and this television production was all but demonized before it even saw the light of day. What exactly has this miniseries been found guilty of? It plays fast and loose with some of the facts? Well, this isn't a documentary, that's for sure--but who expected it would be? As a superficial and fictional presentation, it is not the least bit surprising that elements of the story are emphasized for entertainment purposes. This is a dramatization, not unlike dozens of others that populate feature films and TV movies, that embellishes its story to fit a certain format. Are the Kennedys really that untouchable? As fodder for countless films, TV shows, and novels through the years (perhaps more so than any other family in history), the Kennedy story has been covered from almost every angle--from reverential to scurrilous. Anyone who is scandalized by "The Kennedys" must surely have had their head in the sand about the clan. I have viewed and read dozens of far more incendiary provocations over the last 30 years!

If anything, this miniseries is guilty of being an old fashioned TV product--a throw back to the days before cable ruled the adult viewing audience. In fact, for that reason alone, the presentation is surprisingly tepid--in other hands, this might have been turned into a piece worthy of controversy. Okay, I promise to get off my soapbox now and talk about the actual film. Shot in eight bite sized nuggets (I mean episodes), "The Kennedys" does not purport to be a comprehensive biography.

I really liked this movie! It was probably the best of all the Kennedy sagas I have seen. Katie Holmes was outstanding as Jackie.

...and this one did not disappoint. I'm not a big Kennedy fan, but this mini series/movie was so enjoyable. If you are on the fence, you should definitely see it. I couldn't tear myself away from it. Usually I don't spend this much on watching videos because they are making such horrible ones these days, but this was worth every penny.

Loved watching this mini series! Can't wait for it to come out on DVD. Katie Holmes was gorgeous as Jackie Kennedy. Loved the portrayals of Joe, Jack, and Bobby. Great music too.
