Reading is primarily a solitary joy, but this book reminds us that it can also be pleasurably shared. The most common sharing is a parent reading aloud to a child, a deeply meaningful ritual for both partners, but there are many other ways in which books are mutually enjoyed--children reading to their parents or to each other, or people looking at a book together. This volume explores these and other forms of this wonderful activity. The Blue Lantern Studio has a very large library of antique children's books, and this book is the first of a series in which an aspect of life is explored through a compilation of images and words from their collection. The words in Sharing the Pleasures of Reading are either reminiscences of those who were read to, or reflections on shared reading.

About the Author
WELLERAN POLTARNEES has a lifelong love of gardens. His first memory is falling out of his baby carriage and landing on a bed of odorous white flowers which not only kept him from injury, but made the experience a sensual delight. He collects books about, and pictures of, gardens -- but there are few timeless things that he does not so honor. He uses a book called Great Gardens of the World as a guide whenever he travels, and, with the exception of the Boboli Gardens in Florence, which came highly recommended and which he found monotonous -- the gardens have always refreshed him. His favorite time for gardens is night. His favorite garden music is Manuel De Falla's "Nights in the Gardens of Spain", and his favorite garden poem is "The Garden" by Andrew Marvell.

Reading Together
When we see something amazing we call others to look at it with us. It can be bad or good, but humans wish to share moments of importance. We call our fellows to the window to see lightning fill the field; we pass a letter bearing bad news from hand to hand; when we receive a surprise package we open it together. Yet it is not just the unexpected we wish to share - everyday events like a puppy chasing a shadow, or a child fallen asleep on the floor are as likely to gather a crowd as a burst pipe in our kitchens.
