Book Description

October 15, 1998
Sharing the Road narrates some of the experiences the author enjoyed on three of his bicycle tours: on the Outer Banks of North Carolina; on the Blue Ridge Parkway; and in the People's Republic of China. The author and his son toured the Outer Banks on their bikes self-contained for six days. They also explored the mountains together on short bike rides for four days. The author toured the People's Republic of China for two weeks with 50 American bicyclists as the guests of the Ministry of Culture. These bicyclists considered this to be the trip of a lifetime. They were accorded special attention by the Chinese as they toured some of the famous sites in China. They cycled in Beijing, Nanjing, Zhenjiang, Changzhou, Wuxi, and Suzhou. They were the first foreign bicycling delegation ever permitted to ride their bicycles across the gigantic Yangtze River Bridge in Nanjing. Whether you are a bicyclist or not, you are sure to enjoy the adventure the author write! s about in this book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The book begins with a brief history of the amazingly durable bicycle. The author then takes you with his son and him on a six-day 360 mile selfcontained camping trip on the lovely Outer Banks of Virginia and North Carolina. Next, the author and his son go to the Blue Ridge Mountains to see what bicycling in the mountains is like. They find it quite a challenge, and vow to return to the mountains again with bicycles having some lower gears. Last, the author takes you with him as he and 50 other American bicyclists from 25 different states tour the People's Republic of China at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Culture. You are bound to thrill at the exciting experiences the author shares with you about his unique trip. -- A Reader

About the Author

The author has been riding a bicycle for over 50 years. He got his first bicycle when he was 10 years old. While serving in Germany with the U. S. Air Force he enjoyed riding 10 or 12 miles out into the coutryside after work. The Germans thought it quite strange to see an American that enjoyed riding a bicycle, since most Americans they knew preferred to travel by car. Bicycling has long been regarded as one of the best fitness activities a person can engage in. The author sings the praises of bicycling and urges his readers to take advantage of the benefits of cycling for themselves.
