This book deals with the subject of shark attack like no other. Mr. Baldridge not only provides in depth details of the actual attack, he actually tries to explain WHY these attacks might have happened. He provides statistics about: depth, water temp., activity of the victim prior to the attack, and even body parts that were attacked. This book is in my opinion, one of the greatest shark books to date

This was a favorite book of mine when I was a teenager. I even wrote a letter to the author, picking some nit or other (and he replied). In re-reading it decades later I have discovered all over again what I liked so much then - that the author revels in the scientific process, that mere data without analysis can lead to misunderstanding... that knowing we need to know more is not an admission of defeat. Plus of course there are all the shark stories! So, read it for the gruesome thrill, or read it for the tour-de-force of science at its best, but either way it will reward. Asimov, Sagan, Dyson, all wrote excellent books about scientific enguiry. If you do read this book, and like that aspect, these guys will also be good reads.

Living in Sarasota , fl . at the time this book was published, it had a tremendous effect on me. After 40 years of living here and fishing being a big part of my life, I still don't go in the water. Few people realize this is the shark capital of the world. In the fall and winter months the Kings and Spanish mackerel come very close to shore and bring with them the sharks by the 1000's. One in every 5 fish is either a shark or has been attacked by one on the way to the boat. Baldbridge was living here and working for Mote Marine at the time this was published. This book reads like a novel but is non-fiction.. The shark in the Jaws episode is even based in real life and is explained in detail...much more gore than the movie
