Editorial Reviews

Review

Awesome photographs of sharks, their prey, and their marine environments are reason enough for anyone to peruse this book. The information given is more than sufficient to give all but sharkoholics an understanding of the different shark species examined, their characteristics, and the threats to their survival. A sequel to Let s Explore Sharks, this book examines species not covered in the earlier volume. RECOMMENDED; reviewed by Ro Becker --Pennsylvania School Librarians Association

Grades 1 to 4: Shark Encounters highlights several species, including the breathtaking Scalloped Hammerhead of the eastern Pacific. Views of the creatures' prey provide variety, and particularly eye catching is the picture of the giant Napoleon Wrasse snapped with the lens partly above and partly below its shallow habitat. Without underplaying the fearsome and highly developed hunting skills of sharks, O'Neill stresses the importance of predators' roles in maintaining the balance of ocean life. The spectacular full-color images in these works make them beautiful additions (reviewed along with the author's other new book for 2008, Ocean Magic). --School Library Journal

ONeill, Michael Patrick; Shark Encounters 2008, 48pp. $19.95 hc. Batfish Books; 978-0-9728653-4-0, Grades 1-6 Ever seen a shark in a centerfold? This title has several and the photographs are outstanding! Michael Patrick ONeill has created a picture book for students that will intrigue even the most reluctant nature enthusiast. Eight different sharks are included in this author s attempt to dispel all the shark fears of the reader. The book contains some advanced vocabulary, but the photographs will attract a variety of readers and browsers. If you are going to be buying a shark book this season, you should seriously consider this one. Recommended. Roxanne Welch Mills, Supervisor of Media Services, Chesapeake (Virginia) Public Schools --Library Media Connection

About the Author

Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Michael has been a conservationist since childhood. Fishing trips to the Amazon and abroad during his formative years whetted his appetite for exploration. At age 18, he left Brazil for the U.S. to attend college and begin his professional career. In 1991, he moved to South Florida. With the Gulf Stream at his doorstep, he traded his fishing rod for an underwater camera and began photographing the area's rich marine life - a pastime that soon became a passion and an occupation. For the last 16 years, Michael has traveled extensively as a writer and photographer, concentrating on sea life and environmental issues. His award-winning images aim to educate and communicate to others the beauty and fragility of the oceans and the urgent need to protect them.
