Book Description

"A cross between Planet of the Apes, The Hunger Games and Indiana Jones..." J. Hungerford.

Pack your bags for the wild side and hang on tight! Stamp your passport for adventure and enter an exotic world where animals have evolved side by side with humans. Prepare to be transported into an Indiana Jones style adventure and taken on a globe-trotting trek from the vast open plains of Africa, to the breathtaking beaches of Key West and Fiji, to the mysterious jungles of South America, before finally landing inside the gates of Sin City itself - Las Vegas, Nevada. Suspend belief and lose yourself in this roller coaster of a sci-fi thriller that has been called a cross between Planet of the Apes, The Hunger Games and Indiana Jones.

In Las Vegas, Shaw, billionaire casino magnate and self proclaimed world's greatest showman, nears completion on the massive Serengeti Resort & Casino. Its amphitheater is being transformed into an authentic slice of African savanna for the show Predators and Prey which will savagely pit animal against animal in the bloodiest gladiatorial spectacle ever created for human entertainment. The only thing missing is the main attraction - which Shaw soon finds in Shark, the world's only Great White pool-playing shark to be exact.

Shaw envisions the show's tagline as "Come One - Come All To See - The Only Great White Shark In Captivity" but soon learns that capturing the world's top predator and delivering him to Vegas is easier said than done. This daunting task will require the cruel tactics of the evil animal slave trading hyena, Old Jack. The heartbreaking plans they devise and innocent pawns they use to try to coerce Shark's allegiance will force all to rely on primitive instincts to survive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now I Know This May Sound Crazy..... November 24, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Daniel Shields has created a masterful thriller, which is not just a great vehicle for reminding us all that we are the worst predatory species on planet Earth, but also the species that threatens the existence of all others. But don't think for a second that there is any preaching here, there isn't. This is just a great adventure in which the human cast comes off second best to most of this book's sentient animals.
The words flow easily, in a style that paints a vivid framework into which one's imagination can build. I felt his words effortlessly brush me over the threshold of a Disneyesque cartoon world that became more believable with every page I turned. The figures may start out from comic invention, but there is nothing shallow about the directions in which we are drawn. The emotions are those of us all, and carry as much weighty sub-text as one finds in plenty of more familiar adult books.
If in the second chapter you can't quite believe evolution can throw up the Great White Shark that walks tall, plays pool, falls in love with a vixen, and grows into one of the world's most heroic figures, then within a few more pages of engaging reading you will. If you can't quite see we modern humans as the same low life that enjoyed the butchery of the Roman Colosseum, you may soon.
This is an exciting story for all to enjoy, from reading teenagers to time worn adults. A slightly mad vision, certainly it is, but one that most can slip into. One may even grow to get a least a glimpse of why the author and his star characters are so engrossed by the game of pool-billiards.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scared of sharks? Be more afraid of humans... December 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
It's difficult to know how to describe Shark and the Wolf: Predators and Prey... Perhaps as a cross between Aesop's Fables and John Grisham? An intriguing mix of The Sopranos meets Jeff Corwin? Or The Godfather meets The Jungle Book?

Once you read the book, you'll understand my quandry. This is a clever mix of mystery, thriller and humour but cleverly thrown into the mix are both animals and those with animalistic characteristics.

Daniel Shields addresses issues such as animal capture and entrapment, slavery and exploitation and entertainment over ethics in this clever and well-written novel.

What intrigued me most was how Shields introduces two animals normally renouned for their stealth and cunning (the Shark and the Wolf) and yet pitted against humans (and their dirty-handed, double-dealing tactics), it's the humans that come out looking more base and animalistic than the creatures.

This is a wonderful novel with superb writing, well written characters and the only Great White pool playing shark you're ever likely to encounter in literature. It's almost guilt-inducing to find it humorous because there are such serious themes in it but Shields has managed to ensure that an entertaining and well-developed story is delivered while still punching home a few key messages. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book October 21, 2011
By Alex M
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is a great read. It has action and romance. The descriptions of the locales transported me to Key West, Las Vegas and the Serengeti. I could not put the book down as I was anxious to see what would happen next. I love the use of flashbacks in the novel which allow you to understand the characters (how they met and forged relationships).

The idea of a world where animals and humans would live together is a great premise to the story and brings many morale themes to the story.

If you are looking to be entertained this is a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Story by a New Author August 1, 2011
Shark & The Wolf: Predators and Prey by Daniel D. Shields is an amazing and totally unique read. If you are a fan of adventure, billiards, sharks, wolves or animal rights, then this book is for you. And don't let the cover or title fool you, this book is a modern fable written for an adult audience. It takes on the themes of slavery, trafficking, and mans inhumanity to the other creatures we share this planet with in a way that no other book I've ever read has done. At its core the book is a love story between Shark and Vixen, a heartbreaking buddy story about Shark and his golden retriever best friend Dog Z Boy, and an adventure story that transports the reader to exotic destinations with breathtaking action and excitement along the way. I was hooked from page one and read the entire full length book in a single day. Take a chance - You won't be disappointed. I can't wait for a sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shark & The Wolf March 30, 2012

I think this took me a day to read and think it is amusing and moves well. Thanks to the authors ability to see possible evolutionary events. Slavery was never right but has been around since bible days.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 5 star read all the way through December 28, 2011
I would classify this as a sci-fi thriller. The science fiction genre allows us to go anywhere we want and create anything we can imagine. Mr. Shields has successfully created an alternative earth where animals have been genetically altered to be human while retaining, to various degrees, their animal appearances and nature. Mr. Shields works this throughout the novel, giving them very human appearance and attributes, but never too much!

The story follows Shark and his friends. Shark is a completely believable character. An expert billiard player (read that great-white pool shark) who embarks on an adventure to help his main squeeze, Vixen (a fox, get it?) and her dad Gill (a dolphin - this family group is a bit of a story in itself) save the family business - a billiards bar. He embarks on this journey with his best and most faithful friend Dog Z Boy... yup, you guessed it, a dog.

These are very much genetically altered animals that have human form, but retain to some extent their animal appearance. Shark has the head and teeth of a Great White, but talks, dresses in tux or jeans, and retains his predatory nature. The rest of the animals are the same to varying degrees. And some of the philosophical discussions are interesting - from the viewpoint of animals who are now almost, but not quite, human.

The story takes us on a treasure hunt. But not before the disturbing opening story set up and a superb pool match between the lead character and the main antagonist. It appears Mr. Shields is very much into pool. Having previously written a book on pool and having a business that makes an uber pool stick (sorry, cue!) it would be natural for this story to have billiards as a working element.
