Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-3-An easy-reader look at those most popular, if fearsome, fish. Eye-catching illustrations accompany Clarke's text, which includes basic facts on shark physiology and reproduction (no mention of mating), and their wide variety of size, shape, and coloration (speaking of which, Petruccio's lemon shark is brilliantly yellow, and his pink goblin shark, determinedly pink). Oversimplification creeps in with such generalizations as "And sharks love to eat seals" that should be modified by the word "some," as whale sharks are plankton grazers and tiny lantern sharks would not have a prayer of preying on a swiftly swimming seal. However, the topic is surefire, and this book, which is simpler than Allan Fowler's The Best Way to See a Shark (Children's, 1995) or Melvin Berger's Chomp! (Scholastic, 2001), and on about the same level as Joanna Cole's Hungry, Hungry Sharks (Random, 1986), will circulate nicely.

More About the Author

Ginjer L. Clarke writes fun, fact-filled nonfiction beginning readers about weird, wonderful animals. Her love for strange creatures started early, as the first story she remembers writing in the third grade was "The Strange Animal" about a small, pink-spotted imaginary creature called a Woofa. She loves that her job entails visiting zoos and aquariums, reading lots of books, and even watching TV for research. And she can work at home in her pajamas, which is a lifelong dream!

Ginjer's books, most of which are part of Grosset & Dunlap's All Aboard Science Reader series, have sold a combined total of more than 2 million copies worldwide. Her books Freak Out! and Gross Out! were on Publisher's Weekly's 2006 and 2007 lists of top 100 best-selling children's books. Her book Platypus! (Random House Step into Reading) was awarded the Maryland Library Association's 2005 Blue Crab Young Reader Award for Nonfiction and was selected by the National Science Teachers Association as recommended classroom reading. Her books have been favorably reviewed in Booklist, Horn Book, School Library Journal, Children's Literature, and regional newspapers and magazines.

Ginjer is an experienced and lively school, library, and conference presenter, who has appeared at many elementary schools, regional reading and writing conferences, statewide book festivals, bookstores and libraries, and even a zoo. She is a graduate of James Madison University and lives in Richmond, Virginia, with her husband, young son, and several silly-looking pets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids!, October 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sharks! (All Aboard Reading) (Paperback)
My step-son really enjoyed it and read it as soon as he received it! Very educational, as he started immediately bugging me with questions if I know what's the biggest shark, etc. :)

Great book for a great price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good intro for young child, March 25, 2008
This review is from: Sharks! (All Aboard Reading) (Paperback)
My four year old is really interested in sharks and this little book turned out to be a good intro. It's short and there are 1-2 sentences per page with fairly easy words so it was easy for him to memorize and now "read" i.e., recite to me. Highly recommended for a young pre-reader.
