Book Description

A Firefly Guide March 2, 2002

Sharks evoke a mixture of fear and fascination in most people. Portrayed in movies and books as vicious killers, sharks are, in fact, one of the most fascinating and diverse creatures in the ocean.

This handy guide to all the species of sharks in the world will prove invaluable to the diver, tourist, student and naturalist. More than 120 species are covered and illustrated with 450 color photographs to provide a comprehensive look at this magnificent creature.

An ideal book for anyone interested in sharks, it provides up-to-date information with clear color photographs in a handy format for use in the field or at a desk. Readers who need essential facts quickly will be pleased with the orderly presentation of information, the completeness of the entries and the accuracy of the information. The color photographs help in identifying species as well as providing a visual reference for the information presented.

Sharks is an ideal guide and reference for all levels of interest from school project to professional divers.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Following an introduction to these "misunderstood monsters" and an overview of their systems and lifestyle, Perrine offers a spellbinding shark gallery. Color action photographs and specifics on 18 species are provided. The author demonstrates that the shark faces greater peril from humankind than the reverse, for "compared to the 10^-15 people killed by sharks each year," humans are responsible for killing millions of sharks annually. The necessity of this marine predator in the natural system is stressed in Perrine's plea for greater understanding and environmental protection for the shark. Denise Perry Donavin --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Book, September 14, 2004
By
Mako (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sharks (Paperback)
I really like this book, although some of the pictures could be better as far as showing more angles are concerned. It basically describes many of the different kinds of sharks, with information about where they are located, typical size, and different habits of each. It has pictures for all the sharks that it describes, even the obscure ones. I had never seen a picture of a goblin shark (although it is dead) until I got this book! I recommend this book to anyone interested in sharks. While it isn't perfect, it is better than most I've seen, and is a nice book to have in your collection.

Even today the very word "shark" provokes in us obscure fears and ancestral terrors; and the same irrational sense of danger is evoked by other creatures that are entirely different, such as snakes and wolves, although usually people who react violently and fearfully at the mere mention of these creatures have never seen them in the wild, nor are they ever likely to do so. Read the first page
