Book Description

Sherman's Lagoon Collections September 1, 2008
Jim Toomey is "a breath of fresh water." --Washington Post

Lauded for sparking dialogue on topics relating to marine life, Sherman's Lagoon appears in 250 newspapers in 30 countries in 6 languages.

Collecting more than 42 weeks of Jim Toomey's Sherman's Lagoon, this collection transports readers to an imaginary lagoon near the South Pacific island of Kapupu, where a cast of coral reef critters live a charmed aquatic lifestyle.

Commenting on such timely issues as rising sea levels, degrading water quality, and environmental pollution, inhabitants of Toomey's nautical neighborhood include Sherman, an always-hungry, but otherwise typical kind of great white shark, and his witty pearl-wearing wife Megan, along with friendly Fillmore the turtle, geeky fish Ernest, macho hermit crab Hawthorne, and salty old Captain Quigley, who remains vengeful after loosing his leg to Sherman.

This is the 13th Sherman's Lagoon cartoon collection, in addition to two treasuries.

More About the Author

For the past 13 years Jim Toomey has been creating the daily comic strip Sherman's Lagoon, which appears in over 250 newspapers in North America, including the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, and the San Francisco Chronicle. It also appears in over 30 foreign countries, in French, Portugese, Spanish, Norwegian and Swedish. Jim has just completed his tenth book, entitled "A Day at the Beach," published by Andrews McMeel Publishing.

Sherman's Lagoon is a combination of his two life-long passions: drawing and the sea. Jim's been engaged in the former activity since he could hold a crayon, and his love affair with the sea dates back to his early childhood. The inspiration for the comic strip can be traced back to a family vacation in the Bahamas where he saw a real shark swimming in a remote lagoon. Jim became a certified diver at the age of twelve, and, as an adult, has logged dives all over the world, including Asia, Africa, the Mediterranean, Latin America, and extensively in the kelp forests of California.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest comics ever drawn, October 13, 2008
This review is from: Sharks Just Wanna Have Fun: The Thirteenth Sherman's Lagoon Collection (Sherman's Lagoon Collections) (Paperback)
The 13th Sherman's Lagoon collection by Jim Toomey, SHARKS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN is an outstanding winner, joining others in the syndicated strip's growing library and providing especially winning and valuable to any area devoid of regular Sherman comics. A year in the life of a great white shark and his lagoon friends receives black and white and a few color embellishments in one of the funniest comics ever drawn: a top pick for any collection serious about representing syndicated comics and top-notch productions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Comic Strip Being Published Today, March 17, 2009
This review is from: Sharks Just Wanna Have Fun: The Thirteenth Sherman's Lagoon Collection (Sherman's Lagoon Collections) (Paperback)
Jim Toomey is still a genius. He is the last great comic strip artist that we have today. Truly an original concept of seeing a shark and his underwater friends get into the zany situations with the kind of sarcastic, snappy humor that we don't get to see anymore. It's always a blast to see Hawthorn's latest business scheme or Sherman's next crazy adventure. This book is a must read to anyone looking for a good laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharks having fun, July 3, 2011

This is great, easy to digest cartoon humor, kinda like other grand stuff like Mother Gooose & Grimmy. Of course, you don't need to have an analysis of the current economic, political and evironmental issues in your daily life. This stuff provides you the option of sitting back and ignoring all the other clatter as you chuckle in fits.
