5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, January 7, 2000
This review is from: Sharks & Rays (Nature Company Guides) (Hardcover)
Easily the best book on sharks I have ever read. The informationm is well organized, detailed, and scientifically accurate. As a student of Marine Biology, I found it enjoyable to read. For someone less familiar with scientific terms, it could be a bit heavier, as it tends to use many terms, such as pelagic and elasmobranch, repeatedly after only a brief definition. Overall, the book would be an excellent value for anyone interested in sharks. The beautiful photographs alone, present on nearly every page, are worth the price of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best shark book I ever bought, June 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sharks & Rays (Nature Company Guides) (Hardcover)
All I can say is "wow." I've spent most of my weekends looking for the best shark books, and I've found it. This book is not only a definitive book for basic biology of the sharks, but also has bios on individual species and an entire section about how to dive with sharks safely.

What an excellent, well organized reference source for anyone interested in sharks, and especially for scuba divers looking for a good identification book.

Of all the shark books I've reviewed, this one tops my list and is recommended to readers of my web site.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down the best shark book, October 25, 2000
By
This review is from: Sharks & Rays (Nature Company Guides) (Hardcover)
This by far is the best book on sharks that I have seen. The detail spent organizing the species and the layout of the species desription and photo is excellent.

I run a marine biology website and this is the most popular book sold on the site. When people e-mail me with book suggestions this one is always on the top of my list. I have yet to hear any negative responses.

Of all the shark books I have seen, not only is this the most organized, but it is also the most complete. No other book gives as many descriptions of the various shark species as this book.

This book is great fro kids and adults. I think it should be in every families library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book., May 29, 2005

This review is from: Sharks & Rays (Nature Company Guides) (Hardcover)
I bought this book a long time ago and it still is my favorite one pertaining to its subject. It's filled with information and gorgeous photography. Various species of sharks are clearly identified, described, and portrayed, and facts are given about diving locales around the world as well. I've always loved rays and no other book has told me as much about them as this one. The chapters on rays are wonderful and very beautifully illustrated. This book is highly interesting and impressive. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible book, a MUST for anyone interested in the sea, February 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sharks & Rays (Nature Company Guides) (Hardcover)
We bought this book as a Christmas gift for our 12 year old daughter who is fascinated with sharks. What a gem!!! We keep it on the coffee table now as a reference book. Every time an undersea show comes on, someone grabs the book to look up whatever they discuss. This book is full of great information and incredible photographs. Anyone interested in the ocean MUST get this book. We are all certified scuba divers and it is especially valuable to us for identifications, habitats and habits of sharks and rays, and general information which we need to know when siting one of these marvelous creatures!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't ask for more!, February 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sharks & Rays (Nature Company Guides) (Hardcover)
This book is an excellent source of information on sharks and rays. I have another book called, "Princeton's Guide to Sharks" which does have much more sharks listed. That one lists practically every single shark in the world, but all the pictures of sharks are illustrations. This book is mostly clear, and real photographs of sharks on every page. Also some illustrations on the sharks anatomy and teeth. I only wish that this book listed more sharks.

Rays are sharks and it is very hard to find any guide that includes rays. I'm a marine life artist and I need a book that has rays. The Princeton Guide, a field guide, only has sharks-no rays. I don't know why most books on sharks don't include rays but when I found this book I was very pleased. It doesn't have too many rays as one would expect but quite a few and good enough for me. The book is a field guide but also very informative.

Still I could not ask for much more in this book-except include more rays if there are more in the world. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants info on all kids of sharks and rays. I love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on sharks, January 11, 2009
By
This review is from: Sharks & Rays (Nature Company Guides) (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this book as much as my son. It is very well organized, the format makes it easy to read and understand the information presented about the sharks and rays, and thought the 'how to dive' section at the back was a very useful bonus (my son and I both scuba dive). The pictures are excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the group, October 29, 2001

Currahee (South Mississippi) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sharks & Rays (Nature Company Guides) (Hardcover)
The Nature Company's Guide to sharks and rays is a well written introduction to this group of truly wonderful creatures. It is not the best book, but if you have an interest it should be in your library. It will be especially useful to the teen reader or marine naturalist/hobbyist. The photography and illustrations are beautiful and informative. The write ups on individual species, while not all inclusive to any particular group or geographic area are great. They cover some little known but fascinating animals. My only complaint is that it's a little TO visual, it tends to rely on the graphic to make points over the text and is a little short on newer science. But this may be a plus for the new student of marine biology. If you or an friend has an interest in fishes in general or elasmobranchs in particular you want this book.
