Book Description

6 and up1 and upStrange and Wonderful
From the tiny cookiecutter to the great white, the world's oceans are home to hundreds of species of marvelous and mysterious sharks. There's the giant whale shark - longer than two school buses but gentle enough to swim with humans; and the swell shark, which can wedge itself into a hideout and then swell so that it cannot be pulled out. There are sharks that lay eggs and sharks that have live babies. Some are small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, and some have teeth bigger than your fist. Join acclaimed author Laurence Pringle on a fascinating exploration of the wide variety of fish classified as sharks. Together with Meryl Henderson's beautiful and realistic illustrations, young readers will be taken on an unforgettable journey deep under the sea.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-Handsome, realistic acrylic paintings enrich an informative, clearly written text in this inviting introduction to a fascinating array of sharks. Pringle includes basic data on shark anatomy, their physical capabilities and behaviors, their importance in the food chain, reproduction (though mating receives scant mention), and the problems faced by this ancient group from human overfishing and "finning." The lucid text and the elegant illustrations march in perfect step, creating an attractive fusing of art and information. Even if you already own Gail Gibbons's Sharks (Holiday, 1992) and/or Betsy Maestro's A Sea Full of Sharks (Scholastic, 1997), you should make room on your shelves for this one. From the dramatic cover to the final plea for shark preservation, it's an eye-catching, edifying work.

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5, younger for reading aloud. Similar in concept to Pringle and Henderson's Bats! Strange and Wonderful [BKL Mr 15 00], this wide-format picture book for older children concentrates on another of nature's often maligned creatures, sharks. The well-focused text describes shark anatomy, features, and habits, and introduces a number of different species. Meryl Henderson's handsome acrylic paintings, less sensationalized than the illustrations found in other shark books, show sharks in the wild and include an excellent view of a shark's skeletal system compared with that of another fish. 3.0 out of 5 stars Very thin book, January 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Although the gift recipient enjoyed this book, I was a little disappointed that the book was a very thin paperback, especially for the price.
