5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!, October 24, 2007
This review is from: Sharkwater: The Photographs (Hardcover)
By far the most striking and startling ocean photo book ever made. I really think you should buy it;) The more people we make aware of the plight of the oceans, the more likely we can turn the situation around as we've done for the whales.

This is a fantastic story and pictoral documentation of a amazing journey. The revelations about sharks and an industry of profound disregard for their well being, are profound. I could not put this book down. A shark, nature, or ecology minded readers must have book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing and Shocking- a must buy!, November 26, 2007

This book contains beautiful and shocking images about sharks and our oceans. While beautiful, they are at risk. This book details the tragic shark finning and one persons journey to expose just how barbaric it is. Our oceans are a vital part of our ecosystem and need to be respected. This book is something that everyone should see just to get an idea of what are oceans are all about, as well as what threatens the species that inhabit them. Never doubt that a small group of people can change the world; because that is all that ever has!

This book contains some of the most beautiful and stunning photgraphs of some of the oceans most important creatures. It is clear that a lot of hard work and care went into capturing the mystery and allure of sharks while bringing attention to a great cause.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning pictures!, October 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Such an awesome book, a great compliment to the movie itself. Was much larger than I thought it would be, it's a full size coffee table hard cover book. Great quality, amazing pictures, and everyone who's seen it has loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great companion to DVD, January 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is a great companion to the DVD and yet it is stunning enough by itself to keep you turning the pages of beautiful and sometimes touching photographs. There is more to the book than just photos of sharks and their hunters. If you enjoy marine life you will love this book!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, November 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Beautiful book full of a lot of gorgeous ocean photography (and some graphic photos relating to shark finning). Also includes many poignant quotes from the movie that are great tidbits for people to pick up and learn about while flipping through. I love this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the movie or who's never seen it but is interested in ocean preservation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where on earth are the sharks?, January 14, 2010
This review is from: Sharkwater: The Photographs (Hardcover)
The book "Sharkwater" is a companion to the documentary of the same name, also available from Amazon. The movie "Sharkwater" is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, and it has received a lot of awards at various international film festivals. The movie follows the controversial action group Sea Shepherd as they try to save sharks from poachers in Costa Rica and the Galapagos. It also contains splendid footage of sharks.

I had expected the book to be pretty much the same. Sure, the photos are (mostly) excellent. Most are in colour. But where on earth are the sharks???

I'd say only about 10% of the photos in the book version show sharks. Instead, we are treated to pictures of starfish, jellyfish, barracudas, seals, iguanas and the Sea Shepherd crew. All very interesting, to be sure, but I wanted more hammerheads and whale sharks! Not to mention our old friend (and Spielberg's nemesis), the Great White. In that sense, the book was something of a disappointment.

Still, since the photos aren't bad, I nevertheless give "Sharkwater" four stars. But I prefer the movie documentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Say NO to Shark fin soup !, September 4, 2008

This is one thing you will certainly come away with after watching the film.

As a scuba diver, sharks are what you want to see, especially the whale shark, but they are generally so shy they will certainly keep their distance.

The film sees Rob Stewart explore the `Darwin's theory of evolution' Galapagos islands and Costa Rica. Rob is a professional underwater photographer and videographer so the images he captures while gliding through the depths are stunning. That is until they turn to the finning operations, the corruption and images of sharks caught in a long lines where you can but ponder `what is humanity doing'.

This film really gives you a wake up call to the importance of the oceans and the sharks place at top of the food chain to keep everything balanced.

The books emphasis goes more on the role of the Sea Shepherd, the ocean's eco systems and gives you a chance to look again at the gracefulness of the shark.

A must watch/read.
