Editorial Reviews

"The Monet of Classical Guitar...a master colorist." Atlanta Journal

Renowned classical guitarist Sharon Isbin follows up her Grammy-winning album, Journey to the New World, with another extraordinary musical exploration, Sharon Isbin & Friends: Guitar Passions. This time, the journey is focused on Isbin's guitar heroes and has a Latin American flavor on many tracks. Joining Sharon on this new recording are three-time Grammy Award-winning rock guitarist/composer Steve Vai, innovative jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan, and the platinum-selling rock band Heart's guitarist/composer, Nancy Wilson, among others.

I'm sure there will be purist who will wrinkle their eyebrow to inviting the musical gentiles into the classical chamber and letting the good times roll.

This is an assortment of pieces with Sharon Isbin accompanied by other musicians, including electric guitar, acoustic steel guitar, sax, voice and percussion. Of couse Sharon's playing is impeccible. The pieces with electric guitar are intersting. I did not like them all, but that a personal issue, not the quality of the recording. The fade out ending of the first track, porro, seemed strange but apparently is actually written that way. Overall, a nice CD of eclectic arrangements.

Anything from Sharon Isbin is going to be good, but this time she is with other masters in their genres. Who would think a classical guitar player would record with a top notch rocker? "Different" is what most folks would say; maybe "unique." But it borders on genius. These kids play well togehter! And the jazz vocals on a later cut have to be heard to be believed! If you buy this CD, don't expect to break out the cheese, crackers, and wine and relax next to the fireplace. This CD grabs your attention and holds it. There is no problem with each cut sounding the same as the one before; you'll find yourself saying, as I did, "Is it over already?" I think you'll like it.

I just got the CD this afternoon and finished my third listen-thru. It's simply wonderful. Ms. Isbin, with guest artists, has created a CD with a fresh, original sound that is simply marvelous. She rivals Yo Yo Ma with her creativity. This CD gets a 10 for listenability. While I bought it thinking of background sound, I find myself listening intently with each play. Casual guitar fans and real afictionados will find a lot to like with this CD. Bravo, Ms. Isbin!

Listen to this collection. Then move on to hear her wide, expert and beautiful other contributions to our world of music. I do not know of any equals who are as productive in this era.

Sharon Isbin is a guitar genius, her incredible and passionate rendering of both classic and contemporary pieces are filled with both imagery and imagination, she possesses true artistry and instrumental prowess, only seen by the likes of Segovia { one of her teachers}; and only a handful of guitarists, in the history of the instrument! A must - have for any guitar fan, be it rock, jazz, or classical! I love her collaborations with the other artists on this collection rightly named " Guitar Passions"!!!
