digital display failures,
By Unhappy Consumer (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sharp R-1210 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Over-the-Counter Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
this is the second sharp microwave i've had and with both, the digital display failed after brief episodes without power. unfortunately, the failed part costs as much as a new microwave. the first microwave we threw out. the second is still under warranty and will be fixed. sharp's authorized service center advised me that this 'happens a lot with sharps' and told me that they currently had seven more in the shop for the same problem. in fact, the part is on back order and i'm waiting for it before my oven can be serviced! sharp denies a problem! i find it hard to believe that they are unaware of huge orders for this 'board' that controls the digital display. my advise is to stay away from sharp microwaves until sharp fixes this obvious problem.

This review is from: Sharp R-1210 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Over-the-Counter Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
This Sharp replaced a 20+ year old 700 watt J. C. Penney/Panasonic convection/microwave oven which was the first kitchen appliance my wife and I bought together. We try to take care of our appliances, read the manuals, and follow the instructions; funny how that's consistently brought us good luck. I've been cooking exclusively on it for the past three weeks while we waited for our countertops in our kitchen rennovation and my Jenn-Aire has been disconnected. The only reason I'm giving the Sharp four stars instead of five is because I can make no real comment on its durability and longevity in three weeks, but its performance to date has been 5-star. I picked the Sharp over similar Panasonics because current production similarly sized and featured Sharps weigh 25 to 30 percent more than Panasonics; they seem more sturdy to me. I've owned several other Sharps for office and cabin use and have had no problems with any of them. After reading other reviews here, we did purchase an extended warranty along with the oven, although we live in an area with fairly stable mains electricity and we don't put stuff in the microwave that tend to wreck microwaves.
The Sharp over the counter micorwave came well packed with all necessary mounting and hook-up accessories. Our cabinet installer was impressed with the mounting hardware, design and instructions. Final mounting was solid, flush and professionally "built-in". I've ordered the accessory bars and hooks for hanging some other kitchen equipment from the bottom of the oven. There have been significant power and feature improvements in microwaves. This Sharp O.T.C. works perfectly in our corridor kitchen rennovation and effectively gave me one third more useable counter prep space. While there are other microwaves for over the range mounting (incorporating exhaust fans we did not need), the Sharp was the only microwave I found with over the counter mounting and controls. The sensor cooking and reheat functions are easy to use and work very well. The automatic popcorn function leaves more "old maids" even on the "more cooking" setting, but popcorn popping is so fast that I just monitor it manually. Steaming vegetable and cooking rice is also quick and perfect. Reheating coffee and beverages is flawless. Door mounted controls are clear, intuitive, and lend a sleek and uncluttered look. Operation is fast and quiet. Built in task light illuminates what use to be the darkest corner of my kitchen quite adequately. Recommended.

WARNING !! BAD LED CONTROL UNIT DESIGN,
By
This review is from: Sharp R-1210 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Over-the-Counter Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
I have replaced the control unit, aka led panel...all one part # CPWBFB075MRU0 three times. With the original unit that's one, Sharp repaired...that's two, one I bought that's three and now it needs a fourth. I don't think so, no more Sharp microwaves for me.
If you want to replace the unit it is very east to do. Go to [...] and type in the model # it's about $[...]. I would suggest a one month subscription to Consumer Reports to evaluate ovens before you purchase, it's only $[...] for one month subscription.

After a year the control panel went black. We're still using it. Would like to replace with a built in from a different company. I would never buy another sharp

Bad Display Board Design,
By Dad1999 (Chelmsford, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sharp R-1210 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Over-the-Counter Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
I have had 3 display failures. The first was a few months after I installed the unit. 'Customer Service' allowed the repair with out cost to me. However, I brought the unit home and the display failed immediately. I returned the unit and the display board was replaced again. This time I had to wait a couple of weeks for the part to arrive. Almost one year later to the day the display has failed again. 'Customer Service' will not pay for the labor but after persistence will pay for the part.
My recommendation is stay clear of this microwave. I am waiting for a class action suit to recover my losses. One star is to high for the problems with this unit!

Stay away from Sharp Microwaves!,

This review is from: Sharp R-1210 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Over-the-Counter Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
I too had my display break after about a year. Same as others- when there was a minor electrical disturbance. Because I had memorized the functionality, I continued to use it- until the start button broke! Now it is worthless. Stay away from Sharp microwaves- they have multiple quality issues.

LED on the blitz again,

This review is from: Sharp R-1210 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Over-the-Counter Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
I loved this Microwave. I designed my new kitchen with this undercounter microwave as a feature. The task lighting coordinates with my undercounter lighting and the front door, the only part that shows is very sleek and looks great in my kitchen. During the first year of operation a power failure due to a hurricane knocked out the LED function on the door. This was coverered under the one year warranty and Sears did the warranty work and replaced the entire front door. The service person said Sharp was known in the industry as having very sensitive electronics and perhaps a surge protector would help. I purchased one and then during the second year of operation another power failure occured due to hurricane. This time I had a surge protector and I unplugged the mircrowave until the electric had been fully restored. Again I lost the LED function, this time I did not have a warranty. I contacted the surge protector warranty department and had to mail them the surge protector. They tested and replaced their product, but said the protector had not sustained any surge damage therefore, they could not warranty the microwave. The rest of the microwave is functional and I am still using it from memory since I do not have the LED prompts to help me set the microwave. I am currently considering whether to add a shelf and smaller countertop microwave or reorder the R-1210 which I like for its interior size and appearance.

Works good so far. Seems kind of expensive for the quality but is the only option I could find for the very specific opening that we had in our cabinets.

Display Gone!,
This review is from: Sharp R-1210 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Over-the-Counter Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
Just as the other reviewers, my microwave worked fine but the display went out after just a few weeks. Unlike one of the other reveiwers, I did not have the functions memorized. This unit was highly recommended to me by a reputable appliance dealer but it seems they, too, deny the display problem. The Sharp is the only microwave I know of without stove vents that mounts into the upper cabinets. This was a huge selling point for me but it was not worth the added expense of this now useless unit. Sharp needs to address this issue as it is too much a problem to be ignored.

My first microwave died after 8 years (electrical started shorting out and causing arcs). Since it's over-the-counter, I looked for an exact replacement. I'm so glad Sharp still makes this one (with a few updates). It was essentially a "pop old one out, pop new one in". No professional required. The directions were easy, and the box it came in is part of the installation technique (use the boxt to rest the old microwave as it comes out - and put new one on to lift it up. These things are heavy!). Always loved this microwave - powerful and cooks evenly.
