From the Manufacturer

From the Manufacturer Manufacturer's Description (June 20, 2009)
Enjoy the best of 1080p video on your HDTV with the Sharp BD-HP22U Blu-ray Disc Player, which is designed to work seamlessly with Sharp AQUOS LCD HDTVs to deliver additional high-definition content. The BD-HP22U's BD Live Profile 2.0 provides a multitude of interactive features found on BD-Live Blu-ray Discs through an Ethernet jack-enabled Internet connection. You'll be able to download and stream bonus content such as additional scenes, shorts and trailers as well as engage in multi-player interactive games.

Download and stream bonus content such as additional scenes, shorts, trailers and multi-player interactive games thanks to the BD-HP22U's BD Live 2.0 Profile (see larger image).
The BD-HP22U also incorporates several features that help to improve your home theater experience, including a Quick Start feature that starts playing a Blu-ray disc in as little as 10 seconds as well as advanced audio decoding, a high quality picture with AQUOS Pure Mode, and lower power consumption (19W in standby mode).

With AQUOS Pure mode, the BD-HP22U provides unparalleled clear contrast and details when connected to a Sharp AQUOS LCD TV with AQUOS Link function (via HDMI cable). Sharp engineers designed this mode so that the BD player recognizes the connection to the AQUOS TV, in turn producing the best picture possible. When the BD player is connected, the AQUOS automatically switches to "dot by dot" mode allowing you to view every pixel of 1080i and 1080p content with no overscan.

Connections
  • 1 HDMI (version 1.3)
  • 1 component video
  • 1 composite video
  • 1 analog audio (L/R)
  • 1 digital optical audio
  • 1 Ethernet (RJ-45)
  • 1 BD USB memory port
The BD-HP22U also enables superior video quality with state-of-the-art HDMI 1.3 digital output with x.v. color, and 1920 x 1080 video at 24 frames per second output, matching the playback of the original film. This feature eliminates the need for frame-rate conversion that can cause motion artifacts on film-based material and degrade image quality.

For added convenience, the BD-HP22U includes Sharp's proprietary Quick Start feature for quick disc loading and 2 GB of USB memory. It also features a JPEG viewer, which allows you to view your favorite digital images from your CD collection on screen in a slide show format. For lower energy bills, the BD-HP22U offers low power consumption in both Power On mode and in Standby mode.

Features

  • HDMI Output: A single cable connection carries complete digital audio and video connection between your HDTV and the BD-HP22U player for the best high-definition video and highest fidelity audio in home theater today. Blu-ray Disc technology brings the multiplex experience right to your home.
  • Full HD Resolution: The Blu-ray Disc format has full 1080p resolution capability--that's the maximum picture resolution available today. 1080p = 1,080 lines of vertical resolution, progressively scanned.
  • High Fidelity Audio: Blu-ray technology lets you take advantage of the latest surround sound formats such as Dolby TrueHD. This means you will enjoy high-quality lossless 7.1 Channel digital surround (48kHz only) that is bit-for-bit the equivalent of the master recording.
  • HDMI Up-scaling: Even your existing standard definition DVD library can look better than ever because Blu-ray Disc players are backwards compatible with your DVDs. By optimizing standard DVD playback signals to 1080p (when displaying on a 1080p capable HDTV with HDMI technology), the BD-HP22U can deliver more picture and sound quality.
  • JPEG Viewing: Digital images recorded onto a CD-RW/R can be viewed in a slideshow format on screen, delivering both still and video images for greater versatility.

  • Other features include advanced audio decoding, a high quality picture with AQUOS Pure Mode, and lower power consumption in both Power On mode and in Standby mode (see larger image).
AQUOS LINK Function: Why use two remotes when you can use one? The AQUOS LINK function allows you to control both your Sharp AQUOS LCD TV and your AQUOS Blu-ray Disc Player together. When you connect your AQUOS LCD TV to the Blu-ray Disc Player via an HDMI connection, you will have seamless interoperability between your AQUOS LCD TV and the BD-HP22U.
  • Quick Start: A proprietary Sharp technology allows you to enjoy viewing high-definition content on your big screen quicker than most other Blu-ray Disc Players. Unlike many other players, the BD-HP22U has an impressive start-up time allowing you to begin watching your movies in approximately 10 seconds1.
  • BD Live 2.0 Profile: Provides access to a wide variety of real-time content via a network connection, such as movie scene extras, new previews, games, chat and more. The Bonus View function provides access to picture-in-picture special features, allowing you to simultaneously watch your favorite movie scenes and added bonus features on compatible disc.

Great picture, easy setup, but I agree with D. L..M about the AQUOS LINK. In fact, after reading that review I called Sharp to make sure my TV (1 month old) supports AQUOS LINK before ordering this player. They said it supported this feature so I ordered the player.

After getting the player, I couldn't get the AQUOS LINK function to work. I called back tech support, asked the same question - does this TV support AQUOS LINK? Yes they said. OK, tell me how to make it work. I'm put on hold, they come back after 10 minutes and tell me it is not supported.

So, heads up, these items might indicate your Sharp TV doesn't support AQUOS LINK: The remote doesn't have DVD function buttons, the little feature sticker on the side of your tv didn't say AQUOS LINK or your manual doesn't mention it. I guess that seems obvious, but since tech support said it would work, I just figured this was just a sharp feature that was inherent with the TV's and wasn't anything special.

If you are thinking about buying this player because you have an AQUOS TV and you want "seamless operability via the AQUOS LINK function through the HDMI connection" ( their words) be advised that it may not work.
It seems that after you purchase this player and try to get the AQUOS LINK to work the Sharp people will tell you it will only work with certain AQUOS TVs
My AQUOS TV is less than a year old and SHARP people told me sorry but it won't work with your set.
I asked them the Sharp customer service why they don't advertise this feature as working with SOME AQUOS TVs but not all, the supervisor said words are words and it's how you take it

I've had this player for about 2 months now and I'm happy with this purchase for the most part. I don't have an AQUOS TV so, I can't take advantage of the "Aquos Pure Mode" feature. Also, to date no firmware update exists for this model. The picture and sound quality is great for 1080p video and up to DTSHD 7.1 audio running through my Yamaha home theater system. I would recommend purchasing this unit for anyone's home entertainment enjoyment!

easy to match up to my sharp aquos 52" E77U. First blue ray disc I watched was Dark Knight and the sound and picture were fantistic. It uses Aquos Link to automatically adjust the picture for the best possible color and contrast. the only con that I have is that it does'nt pick up the scene that you were watching after you turn off the unit and turn it back on. Other than that I would recommend it to anyone with a Sharp Aquos HDTV.

The Aquos link works perfectly with a Sharp Aquos LC40E67U LCD TV. The TV remote will control the blueray player including some of the more advanced features such as the setup menu, negating the need to use two remotes 99% of the time. Inserting a Blue Ray disk into the player will automatically turn on the TV and a few other minor convenience features. The blueray player itself is just an average priced profile 2.0 player with nothing remarkable. From what I can determine, this is big step up from the bdhp21u.

THe BD-HP22U meets all expectations for a simple cost effective blue-ray player. The price is right and the quality is as good as any other blue-ray.

The BONUS is the SUPPLIED HDMI Cable. The player is advertised with composite cables and yes it is supplied. It looks like Sharp recognized the value in supplying the HDMI cable to make it complete as it should be.

We connect to a Sharp Aquos 40" 1080p LCD and Aquos-Link works as advertised. You only need one remote after you load a DVD to the player.

The unit spins up in a reasonable time and it does have a standby mode to return to the DVD even faster. Picture is great and player automatically goes to 1080p when that is the content. You can also make up upconvert everything by setting it on 1080p.

As with all units, the effective width is about 2" wider if you are going in a cabinet. This allows the stress relief of the power cord and HDMI cable to fit. It would be nice if there were 90 degree turns on the plugs. Our shelf is 11" and the unit is advertised at 10.25 inches wide but unit will not fit due to the plugs. Simple solution is do some cutting on the back of the shelving for more access holes for the plugs.

This unit can be bought for as low as $99 when on special in most electronic stores. That truly makes this a Sharp value.

I am very pleased with this blu ray player. I have it hooked up to my Sharp tv using the "Pure Play" connection. The blu ray picture quality is stunning. I'd say that it is comparable to the Samsung models. The load time for the discs is very quick.

When I initially hooked up the player via HDMI, I was very disappointed with the picture. My TV was showing that I was only getting a 720p picture. But after changing the settings within the player, I was able to get the 1080p picture. It wasnt a big deal, but I just figured that it would automatically produce a 1080p picture when using a HDMI cable.

For the price, this player is a great deal. I had no interest in the Netflix/Youtube options of the more expensive players, so I chose this Sharp and saved myself some money. If your just looking for an exceptional blu ray picture, without all the Netflix/Youtube extra's, this is a great choice. This does have BDLive, but I havent used it yet, so I cant comment on it.

The picture quality of regular DVD's was ok. Definitely better than a standard DVD player, but it isnt great. But I cant compare it to any other blu ray player, so maybe its the standard quality for DVD's.
