4.0 out of 5 stars Works great - but beware of the AQUOS LINK

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great - but beware of the AQUOS LINK, June 10, 2009
This review is from: Sharp AQUOS BD-HP22U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player (Electronics)
Great picture, easy setup, but I agree with D. L..M about the AQUOS LINK. In fact, after reading that review I called Sharp to make sure my TV (1 month old) supports AQUOS LINK before ordering this player. They said it supported this feature so I ordered the player.

After getting the player, I couldn't get the AQUOS LINK function to work. I called back tech support, asked the same question - does this TV support AQUOS LINK? Yes they said. OK, tell me how to make it work. I'm put on hold, they come back after 10 minutes and tell me it is not supported.

So, heads up, these items might indicate your Sharp TV doesn't support AQUOS LINK: The remote doesn't have DVD function buttons, the little feature sticker on the side of your tv didn't say AQUOS LINK or your manual doesn't mention it. I guess that seems obvious, but since tech support said it would work, I just figured this was just a sharp feature that was inherent with the TV's and wasn't anything special.

My AQUOS TV is less than a year old and SHARP people told me sorry but it won't work with your set.
I asked them the Sharp customer service why they don't advertise this feature as working with SOME AQUOS TVs but not all, the supervisor said words are words and it's how you take it

4.0 out of 5 stars Great BD player for the price!, June 21, 2009

I've had this player for about 2 months now and I'm happy with this purchase for the most part. I don't have an AQUOS TV so, I can't take advantage of the "Aquos Pure Mode" feature. Also, to date no firmware update exists for this model. The picture and sound quality is great for 1080p video and up to DTSHD 7.1 audio running through my Yamaha home theater system. I would recommend purchasing this unit for anyone's home entertainment enjoyment!

5.0 out of 5 stars great blue-ray- great price, September 15, 2009

easy to match up to my sharp aquos 52" E77U. First blue ray disc I watched was Dark Knight and the sound and picture were fantistic. It uses Aquos Link to automatically adjust the picture for the best possible color and contrast. the only con that I have is that it does'nt pick up the scene that you were watching after you turn off the unit and turn it back on. Other than that I would recommend it to anyone with a Sharp Aquos HDTV.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good choice for Aquos Link, May 26, 2009
This review is from: Sharp AQUOS BD-HP22U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player (Electronics)
The Aquos link works perfectly with a Sharp Aquos LC40E67U LCD TV. The TV remote will control the blueray player including some of the more advanced features such as the setup menu, negating the need to use two remotes 99% of the time. Inserting a Blue Ray disk into the player will automatically turn on the TV and a few other minor convenience features. The blueray player itself is just an average priced profile 2.0 player with nothing remarkable. From what I can determine, this is big step up from the bdhp21u.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Blu ray picture, September 19, 2009

This review is from: Sharp AQUOS BD-HP22U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player (Electronics)
I am very pleased with this blu ray player. I have it hooked up to my Sharp tv using the "Pure Play" connection. The blu ray picture quality is stunning. I'd say that it is comparable to the Samsung models. The load time for the discs is very quick.

When I initially hooked up the player via HDMI, I was very disappointed with the picture. My TV was showing that I was only getting a 720p picture. But after changing the settings within the player, I was able to get the 1080p picture. It wasnt a big deal, but I just figured that it would automatically produce a 1080p picture when using a HDMI cable.

For the price, this player is a great deal. I had no interest in the Netflix/Youtube options of the more expensive players, so I chose this Sharp and saved myself some money. If your just looking for an exceptional blu ray picture, without all the Netflix/Youtube extra's, this is a great choice. This does have BDLive, but I havent used it yet, so I cant comment on it.

The picture quality of regular DVD's was ok. Definitely better than a standard DVD player, but it isnt great. But I cant compare it to any other blu ray player, so maybe its the standard quality for DVD's.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst BluRay player on the market, October 10, 2010
This review is from: Sharp AQUOS BD-HP22U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player (Electronics)
I have had this player since December 2009 and have had nothing but problems. It will take minutes to load a disc, freeze in the middle of a movie and never start again, and the only way to do anything is to unplug it. On some discs, it will play the previews and then never get to the menu screen (it will freeze right before the menu screen). Or, sometimes, it will make it to the menu screen, but freeze on it and we will have to unplug it. I have downloaded every update Sharp has put out there for it, and it still doesn't work. I love my Sharp LCD TV, but this blu ray player was the worst purchase ever. It completely sucks to rent a movie you have been dying to see, to get home and not be able to watch it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Use the USB drive that came with it for firmware updates!!, April 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sharp AQUOS BD-HP22U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player (Electronics)
Use the USB drive that came with the machine for firmware updates. I used a different USB drive because it was easier to get to and it repeatedly locked up the machine -- don't know what the problem is. Although I have nothing to compare this machine with, it takes what seems forever to load a disc; my dinner is half eaten before I get a picture. Once loaded, the picture is great. Not a whole lot of frills on this machine, either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp Value in Blue-ray with Bonus HDMI Cable, January 24, 2010
By
This review is from: Sharp AQUOS BD-HP22U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player (Electronics)
THe BD-HP22U meets all expectations for a simple cost effective blue-ray player. The price is right and the quality is as good as any other blue-ray.

The BONUS is the SUPPLIED HDMI Cable. The player is advertised with composite cables and yes it is supplied. It looks like Sharp recognized the value in supplying the HDMI cable to make it complete as it should be.

We connect to a Sharp Aquos 40" 1080p LCD and Aquos-Link works as advertised. You only need one remote after you load a DVD to the player.

The unit spins up in a reasonable time and it does have a standby mode to return to the DVD even faster. Picture is great and player automatically goes to 1080p when that is the content. You can also make up upconvert everything by setting it on 1080p.

As with all units, the effective width is about 2" wider if you are going in a cabinet. This allows the stress relief of the power cord and HDMI cable to fit. It would be nice if there were 90 degree turns on the plugs. Our shelf is 11" and the unit is advertised at 10.25 inches wide but unit will not fit due to the plugs. Simple solution is do some cutting on the back of the shelving for more access holes for the plugs.

This unit can be bought for as low as $99 when on special in most electronic stores. That truly makes this a Sharp value.

nice picture, great up-convert worth looking at when shopping zero problems so far, only rate was a 4 because I have seen better image on blue ray, but the upconvert is the best one seen by me.
