4.0 out of 5 stars updating firmware over the network, May 6, 2010

This review is from: Sharp AQUOS BDHP52U 1080P Blu-ray Disc Player (Electronics)
I found the firmware upgrade process a little tricky. The player detected my router and I was able to get the RSS newsfeed. It even checked the internet, and said a new firmware version was available. In spite of the player having an obvious internet connection, it said there was a network error when I went to download new firmware.

I was succesful only after I entered the Communication Setup menu, selected Change the Current Ethernet Setup, Yes to Automatically obtain an IP address, and then continue until I saw that an IP address on my network was acquired and acknowledged by the player.

I have been able to use this player with my Netflix instant que after upgrading the firmware.

Good Luck.

update: It seems like when ever I select a netflix movie, the player will say "sorry, the selection is currently unavailable". If I select the movie immediately again, then the movie will play. Also, it seems that Netflix allows this device to have access to more HD content than my computer.

The product is mostly a solid purchase:

1. The up-conversion is very good

2. The sound quality is exceptional

3. When a BD plays, it plays really well

4. The most demanding BDs still have software issues; Last of the Mohicans, the extended edition of Avatar, others, still have dropped, garbled frames.

5. Firmware updates are spread too far apart

My Vizio (inexpensive) and Samsung (more expensive) BD players don't have the same issues with the same materials.

So, what gives, Sharp?

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a good player, especially for the money, November 4, 2011

I bought it only because I had an Aquos TV, and I wanted the so much advertised integration between the devices. The only plus I got is that BD player remote does work with the TV too. Player itself is crap... it takes forever to start, twice as long to read the disc, and it is NEVER able to connect to the Internet even though all instructions had been followed and I can see the player getting an IP address from my router. Tried to install several upgrades, installations hang 9 times out of 10 (the 10th time it suddenly works though everything I did was exactly the same). On the bright side, I have never experienced any stutter or delays with video playback. But my next player (as well as TV) will NOT be from Sharp.
