Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sharp Aquos LC-26D6U 26" HD-Ready LCD Flat-Panel TV (Electronics)
I ordered this television with high hopes, knowing that despite reports of firmware problems and other defects that I would luck out and save a bundle. But you get what you pay for. Every Sharp Aquos LCD TV manufactured before April 1, 2006 shipped with bad firmware. What does this mean to you?
For me, it meant that 15 minutes after unpacking the TV and turning it on, it turned itself off and never turned back on again. Resets, system resets, power cycling, unplugging components didn't help. My TV was completely bricked. A search turned up threads on websites like AVS Forum with other owners of Sharp TVs in the D4U and D6U series all reporting similar power management problems almost immediately after purchase. For them, the fix was a visit to a Sharp authorized service center to either have the firmware replaced or a physical replacement of boards inside the TV. I say a "visit" because Sharp does not cover in-house technician visits for TVs under 32", a fact they could have informed me of before letting me wait 1 week for a tech visit that would ultimately be canceled. So here I am, 10 days later and hundreds of dollars poorer with no TV to show for it. Instead, it sits at the authorized service center (because Sharp obviously does not vet its service centers to make sure you get good service from them either). I'm willing to bet all of the inventory of D6Us that TigerDirect is selling at fire sale prices were produced before 4/1/2006. Check the serial number on your TV if you do order one. If it begins with a 501-512, 601, 602 or 603, immediately demand a firmware upgrade from Sharp (1-800-BE-SHARP), regardless of whether or not you're experiencing these issues; you will eventually, and hopefully while Sharp's warranty is still in effect for you.

I've have this tv for about a week and I love it. The image quality is great and the setup wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I've read comments elsewhere stating that the setup is tricky however if you have cable all you have to do is split the signal and attach the split signal to the digital and analog coax inputs then let the set walk you through the setup and you're done. The QAM tuner this set comes with means you don't have to pay your cable provider for HD channels as long as they're unencripted. You also don't have to buy an antenna. I live in Fort Lauderdale and subscribe to Comcast. I don't even have digital cable but the set is able to pick up all the major networks, ESPN 1 and 2, and Discovery HD. It's a beautiful things.
P.S. I recommoned using the favorites feature for your HD channels as the setup seems to include every digital channel even if nothing is being broadcast on it.

TV sound quit working after 13 months. Had problems with set turning on randomly. Sharp will not help since TV set warranty was only 12 months. Local bench charges are minimum of $80.00 just to look at it and boards average a few hundred dollars. Sharp Customer Service services and protects Sharp only.

Mixed feelings, some basic design flaws,

When it (works most of the time) it has a very good picture. However there have been many times that it was frustrating when the set malfunctions to have to unplug the set for ten seconds or more then plug it back in to get it reset. I have some backround in machine design; It seems that the microcontroller can get into an undefined state and there is no watchdog circuit built in to get the set back into operation without user intervention. Sharp's recommended service shop and factory technical support failed to address this problem.

Sound Problems,

My problems started after 26 months. No sound until unit warms up (5-10 minutes)then a off & on cycle brings on the sound. Very disappointed in the quality of the unit; from other postings it sounds like I was lucky to have unit work for the 26 months! It's off to the service shop tomorrow.

Another case of the sound board giving out after 18 months. Any company with a conscience would assume warranty responsibility for an obvious engineering issue.
Not at all impressed.

I bought this TV Oct 18th as a refurb from 2nd Act. 2 mos later, haven't watched it yet. It arrived broken (turns on & off continually). 2nd Act totally uninterested. Only Sharp warranty repair in/near Austin is ET Television, which got lowest possible rating on Austin City Search. I couldn't agree more. In shop for 1 month, got it home & still broken. Sharp customer Service has been a nightmare. No response, people on phone keep saying they are sorry, nothing they can do.

I have owned this TV fo 6 Months now. It worked perfectly from day one with no problems. It has a superb picture even in SDTV mode. I don't understand all the problems the other reviewers report. Sometimes reading the instruction book really helps.

I bought a sharp lcd tv from j& r in new york last Jan, after a year and half, when powering on the tv, sometimes works, sometimes not. after unplug in, wait for a while and plug back, worked for a couple months. Send it to service center to checkup, was told that the lcd control board needs to be replaced. when request to get back the replaced lcd control board, was told that sharp does not give back the replaced board, it has to be shipped back, otherwise, you have to pay additional fee to get back the replaced board.. it's rather strange to hear such a lousy policy from any vendor..
But, if you do want to get a sharp, better get a long long warranty..

It Breaks!,
This review is from: Sharp Aquos LC-26D6U 26" HD-Ready LCD Flat-Panel TV (Electronics)
Purchased one 3 months ago new from Ken Cranes. Worked fine until a few days ago, picture went out. Ken Cranes won't replace, they have to send it in for repair and will take 2-3 weeks.
I looked at alot of 26" LCD TV's and decided to go with the Sharp Aquos because of quality of build. I was wrong. I even spoke to Sharp and no chance of replacement. I have to send it in. What a pain. I thought I would get better service going to a retailer (Ken Cranes) and paying full pop retail rather than buying from the Internet and saving. Nope. I should have saved and bought through the net, the after-sale service is the same. |
