Gorgeous TV, but small defects and no Amazon help,
By E.H. (Philadelphia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sharp Aquos LC-37DB5U 37-Inch HD Flat-Panel LCD TV (Electronics)
This Sharp Aquos is just a spectacular TV: great HDTV, sound, look, etc. However, the unit I bought from Amazon had two small defects (scratches) in the upper right corner of the finish and Amazon customer service was actually quite terrible. They simply told me they could not accept returns on TVs over 27 inches. I recommend getting this TV, but from a local store, so that way if you have the same problems as me you can exchange it for a perfect unit, which you and I deserve for the money. Overall: TV great, amazon stinky.

Serious lock-up defect,

This review is from: Sharp Aquos LC-37DB5U 37-Inch HD Flat-Panel LCD TV (Electronics)
I bought this Sharp LC-37DB5U and have enjoyed it for over a year. However, recently it started blacking out and locking up. The TV will not respond to the remote or the set-top buttons. It must be unplugged and plugged in again to get the set to respond. Sharp has been absolutely no help with the problem. After doing research I have found much information on the web that this appears to be a widespread problem with Sharp LCD TVs. According to several threads on the web, Sharp put bad components in as many as 5,000 units, the Aquos D4/5/6/7u models, a mismarked capacitor. The defect described in those models, locking up and failing to respond to remote or set-top buttons, is exactly what I am now experiencing as well with the DB5U.

Great LCD TV,

I purchased this TV about a month ago and have been very happy with it so far. Amazon.com offered the best price I could find from a store that I trusted. The white glove delivery service was fantastic. The delivery person unpacked my television. I asked him to wait while I examined the TV and ensured it was capable of receiving a signal from my cable box. He patiently waited, and once I saw everything worked, I signed for the TV. There are certainly benefits of purchasing a TV directly from a store, however, in this instance the price was much better from Amazon.com and I understood that once I signed for the TV, it was mine. If I had found defects, I simply wouldn't have signed for the package and would have returned to sender. I'm not sure how that would have gone, but luckily that wasn't necessary. Back to the TV: it has a fantastic picture. The refresh rate is better than 12ms and I haven't noticed any issues. Some people complain about the gray blacks on LCD TV's caused by the required backlight. The Sharp AQUOS offers an enhanced black feature that helps with this problem, however, I felt that it decreased the amount of detail. By taking time to adjust the color settings, I found that the blacks looked pretty good and the details were still visible. All in all, as long as you adjust the picture correctly, I think you'll be very pleased with the picture. I would say the only problem with this TV is that it will motivate you to purchase other high-end video equipment. Personally, I will need to purchase a better DVD player capable of upconverting the image to 720P. For those of you interested in video games, I've played some PS2 games and they look quite good. The image doesn't cover the whole screen (a known issue with the PS2 and widescreen TVs), however, some games are capable of 480P and they look quite good. I'm very interested to see how the next gen systems that support 720P look on the TV!
