Satisfied first time DVD owner,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sharp DV-L78U Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I have been researching portable DVD players for about a year and narrowed it to Panasonic and Sharp based on the number of positive reviews and feedback. I "bit the bullet" and bought this Sharp when I saw the Amazon price. It arrived just before Labor Day and I have been using it extensively the last 4 days. I have been extremely pleased with the screeen size, picture quality, sound and ease of use. My 7 year old also loves it. I am not an afficiando but an average guy who enjoys gadgets and I believe this is a great value for the Amazon price.

Really fine DVD player,

I received this player 2 days ago - and have used it a BUNCH since it arrived. It is fantastic! Picture quality is superb, the 7" diagonal screen makes a big difference compared to the 5" or 5.8" screens. Sound is good (for two small speakers) - fine quality for close-up viewing. The portability is really fine. I watched "Lethal Weapon" this morning while making and then eating breakfast. Didn't miss a frame of the movie; of course you trade off the effect of a hugh movie screen, but being able to take it with you as you move around the house (or in a car or plane) more than makes up for a small screen. And actually, because it's so close to your eyes, the size picture you see is probably larger than you would on your entertainment center. The player itself is about the size of a DVD case, and the separate battery pack is the same size. So all the storage space two units require is for 2 DVD cases. My only complaints are placement of the buttons and the size of the remote. The buttons on the unit are pretty close, and several times I've had it on "pause", and intended to hit the "play" button, but accidentally pressed the "stop" button. Good news is that when you start play again (after all the start-up logos, etc.), the movie continues just a little prior to where it left off - unless you've disconnected the power or opened the unit. The remote is rather bulky, what you'd expect for a regularly sized DVD player. A credit card sized one would be nice. But you (or a loved one) won't be disappointed with this player.

(...) It gives me private quiet time to watch movies. I can watch (with headphones) any movie while my 8 year old son sits next to me playing Nintendo. I don't have to turn down the sound if adult language comes on. I can turn off the view screen or just fold it closed it something too spicey is shown. I carry it and watch while I let the dogs in and out, in and out and set it next to the stove while I cook dinner. If I'm up late at night I don't have to worry about waking others while I watch a movie and I can hear everything through the headphones. I take it to soccer practice and even to work where I watch movies on my lunch hour. It's so convenient and a great escape! I thought I would be put off by the small screen, but the color and image is sharp and with the stereo speakers/headphones I'm right in there. Great present for husbands to get busy wives.

Sharper than Panasonic, Cheaper than Sony,
By
This review is from: Sharp DV-L78U Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
In searching for portable DVD players I looked at the Sharp, the Panasonic and the Sony. The Sony has brilliant picture quality, and a bigger screen, ... in DenDenTown Osaka. Sharp and Panasonic are in the same ballpark for price, ... The Panasonic is potentially better, since it has rechargeable batteries, and is therefore the only truly portable player (among these three). However, the screen is a touch smaller than the Sharp, and does not come across as very bright. In all cases, you can use the player as a portable, or plug into a larger screen and sound system. Of these portables, I bought the Sharp because picture quality is pretty good and it is not obscenely expensive. In use, there seems to be an irritating habit for it to "freeze" momentarily, and whether this is caused by DVD glitches or the Player I don't know, not having access to any other player to check. Overall I'm fairly satisfied with it, and I would recommend it to those in the market for a portable. Now if I could only expand on the Region encoding possibilities..

GREATEST PORTABLE EVER,
By Drew Zerman (Deerfield, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sharp DV-L78U Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
Let me start off by saying that this portable DVD player is the greatest out there. I will tell you why:1. Picture quality is superb! There is none better (I have seen some of the "best"). This machine produces images that defy its compact size. 2. Portability. The thing is tiny, and still provides great picture and sound quality. 3. Functions. This thing plays DVDs, DVD-Rs, CDs, VCDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs. It also doubles as a stay-at-home DVD player. Great! 4. Sound. Perhaps not from the built in speakers, but with a good set of headphones, the sound is INCREDIBLE. I recommend the Aiwa Noise Canceling headphones (model #HPCN5). Although, the speakers do provide decent sound. 5. Price. Buy it at ..., it's only [price]!! What a bargain! 6. Battery life. With headphones lasts a good 4.5 hours. 7. Screen Size. 7 inches rules! 8. Screen itself. It does not reflect any light back. Great! Some people will tell you to buy a 5" or 5.8", but don't. Those things are TINY! Maybe an 8", but those can be costly. Hands-down, I recommend this product over all else! Suggestions: Buy good headphones. THIS THING IS SOOO COOL!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!

Sharp Portable DVD,

I have never wrote to any web site neither magazine before 'cuz i don't have much time. I'm just doing this one to let everybody know how i'm really enjoying my Sharp DVD . I have compared both sharp and panasonic at the store and have noticed no great diference between them, only one... the price (sharp being much more cheaper)so it's a smart move to get the sharp. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Changing the subject, forget about Sony , they must be really crazy or stupid to think people will pay all that extra money just for the name "Sony" being just the same product as the others in the market- just forget it.

Poor picture quality,

The size and weight of the unit is a 5+ star value. The sound quality is also rather good but the picture quality is very, very poor.... BR>One of the problems I think is the three stage back light. It really is only a two stage back light. The third stage is total black and no picture. There are no real adjustment options to this unit so you are stuck with what you get right out of the box....

You simply cannot know how good this DVD player is until you have one of your own. Mine goes everywhere with us and is an excellent at-home DVD player. The images are absolutely crystal clear! With a good set of head phones -- you can't escape being part of the entertainment! I could not believe how good this unit is until I bought one. I tried them all and the laptop computers as well - nothing compares! Buy one today!
