True Courage,
By Bonnie Toews "Heart Tugs ... at the crossroad... (Newcastle, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sharp End: A Canadian Soldier's Story (Hardcover)
In Davis' story, we finally come to see the fine calibre of men Canadian politicians have ruthlessly shamed with old "blame the many for the few bad apples." At last, the conditions our soldiers face on peacekeeping missions are revealed. Perhaps if more who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces would step forward and tell their stories, we would see how proud we can be of our Canadian peacekeepers, over and over again. Davis proves how valuable he is as a soldier along with all the Airborne he served with. He also demonstrates how callous the Canadian government is in its treatment of the armed forces that it sends on peacekeeping missions worldwide. What's more, Davis tells his story in his own voice, and that's also what makes his tale so mesmerizing.

I am the person who failed the driver's course James refers to in his book. Any lads out there with a desire for adventure should join the forces. If you keep an open mind, you will have no regrets. I am proud to have served in Her Majesty's Canadian Army. Merry Xmas James!

Phenomenal read James. I wasn't able to put the book down. It is a great thing to hear the real story from the boots on the ground, rather than some reporter or politician. A better read than Marcinko's "Rogue Warrior" because there is less arrogance in your voice than in "Demo Dick's". I applaud your sense of humor as well. Glad to have read it.

An Amazing Story,
By Nick Cross (Ottawa, Ont, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sharp End: A Canadian Soldier's Story (Hardcover)
I am only 14, but as I read this story of danger and heroism I am touched. This detailed book of the Canadian Forces and one mans life as a sergeant is amazing. It has inspired me to join the Forces when I'm older. It is a book that every student should be required to read. It is a vivid story full of adventures. I read and found it great. I was looking for a book on the Canandian Army in the local library and found this book it looked very interesting so I checked it out. It's the best book I've read in my life!

Truth, at least,

This review is from: Sharp End: A Canadian Soldier's Story (Hardcover)
This book reveals story different than officials in US and Canada told us. I learned how easy I've been manipulated.Page 167-168: The next morning, a report came in from the observers that no Serb mortars had fired that they were aware of. The trajectory was calculated and it was determined that the Bosnians had mortared their own children. For public relations purposes. Sure enough, the morning news in the city reported that the UN and their Serb allies had killed these children. We could not believe it.

This book is the most facinating piece of military-related literature that I have ever read. I wish I could have given it 6 stars, because 5 is not enough. RECCE PLATOON all the way!

The Real Canadian Infantry,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sharp End: A Canadian Soldier's Story (Hardcover)
I myself also being a member of the Canadian Armed Forces found that this book really hit home. It really shows the amount of personal drive the Canadian Infantry soldier has despite the pervasive political control and outdated equipment. It was also a chance to reflect on my own and ongoing experiences as an Infantier and gave me a true idea about Yugo and Rawanda that I had only heard about, but never truely understood. If you have any affiliation with the Canadian Army, buy this book.

I'm a private in the Canadian Forces RCR and just finished reading James Davis' book about a month ago and I have to say that it was well written for the most part. I picked it up because I wanted to learn more about overseas tours the Canadian Army participated in and this book told me a lot and will definetely help me to expect the circumstances I have to deal with when I am there. The story is good, dealing with everything from basic training to Sarejevo so I could relate to a bit and I think it would also serve purpose to those who are considering joining the CF.
