Product Description

The Half Pint is compact enough to fit in the sleeper compartment of many heavy-duty trucks. It is only 14-3/8" x 14-1/4" and yet it has a 10-3/4" carousel turntable to accomodate full-size dinner plates.

First off, ignoring price, this is a great microwave if you need/want something for a small room, office, apartment, etc. Let's talk about what it is. It's a small microwave. That's it. It's "Sharp" in that it's very aesthetically pleasing. I actually keep it in my office where we're not technically allowed to have our own microwaves. I work in IT, however, and this little beauty doesn't even look like a microwave. People think it's some kind of new server! :)

Other than the slick looks, it seems well built enough. The door seems remarkably light weight compared to the rest of the unit, but not to any kind of alarming degree. The turntable inside seems to be of thick durable tempered glass.

Here's what the microwave isn't, and doesn't even try to be...it's not a full featured high powered microwave. It's not for cooking Thanksgiving dinner. It's for reheating leftovers, warming up beverages, cooking popcorn, and similar small tasks. It's 600 Watts of power, which means I've roughly had to double my cooking times versus a "normal" full sized microwave. There's no power settings on this, it's 100% on or off. There's no numerical pad for entering exact numbers, instead you add increments of 10 minutes, 1 minute, etc. which takes a second to get used to. There's also no window as in a traditional microwave, which seems little off putting at first, but shouldn't really be necessary.

Now here's where the review goes off the traditional tracks and I really would like to know more. Sharp made these microwaves back in the late 90's and early 2000's from what I can tell. They've long since discontinued manufacture. There's still a lot of used ones going on eBay so there's obviously still a market for them. What I don't understand is how they're selling these new units. Original price on the old units was right around $100 and the used ones are going for about the same price. These are expensive at their current price, but I can vouch that they're still new. No one anywhere else is selling these new, my question is how is Pana-Pacific obtaining these or do they have some massive warehouse somewhere full of new old stock? Nothing about the packaging seems to indicate these are anything but new manufacture.

I took one star off for the excessive price point. You can definitely pick up a comparable, more traditional microwave elsewhere for a much better price. But if you want a new one, really want the look and/or the form factor, and don't want to mess around with used options, this is the only game in town.

If you're on-board with the things I mentioned, I think you'll be very happy with this purchase, bearing in mind the price is excessive but I guess you get away with that when you're the only game in town.

Best to All!

Great truck microwave January 18, 2011

I bought this microwave for use in a 2006 KW 600. After I removed the plastic spacer off of the back of it, it fit into the closet in my truck and secure the hard door with no problem. I believe that the plastic is there to make sure there is an air gap behind the microwave. I just make sure that I slide it forward a couple of inches before I use it. It has worked perfectly off of the 1800w inverter in the truck. You just have to add a minute to most cooking times because it is only 600w and recipes usually assume 1000w. I have run it simutaneously with my 5c Mr Coffee or my 2 slice toaster with no problems. I use it at least twice a day. Hopefully when it gives out I will be able to get another one.
Yes, it does fit a full-sized dinner plate. The reason it is a cube shape is because the magnatron is in the top and not on the right side.

I have had a sharp half pint for years and it has delivered service without fail. Just recently the door spring broke so I went in search of a reploacement. The Half Pint size fits my limited kitchen space to a T so I went back to that reliable product. I could not get a green replacement (matches my kitchen decor) so I opted for a black one. Still works wonderfully. My only issue is that the black one does not have a viewing window in the door like the green one. I never realized how much I used that viewer until it was gone. Otherwise the product is more than satisfactory.

Fizzled
Bought this 12/3/09 - stopped working end of 6/2011, that is not too much of a longevity. When it does work it performs - very expensive.
