Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sharp Aquos LC-37D4U 37-Inch HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV (Electronics)
I just received this TV last week. Spent a few months researching 37 inch flat panel HD TVs and kept coming back to the Sharp Aquos line because of the superb picture and features. I am not disappointed in my purchase. The screen looks great from any angle, even at 170 degrees.HD broadcasts look superb, even at factory default settings. Other than turning up the bass a bit, turning on the virtual surround-sound feature, customizing the screen font/characteristics, and turning on the OPC/DL feature (that allows the brightness to automatically adjust with room lighting), I really haven't changed any other settings. Even analog TV looks good on this unit, as long as you aren't standing too close to it. The TV has a great "Smart Stretch" feature that somehow displays 4:3 analog broadcasts on the full 16:9 screen without causing any noticeable distortion or picture cropping. I'm not sure how this is accomplished, but it is impressive, esp. compared to stretching techniques used by other brands or cable boxes. I avoided a plasma screen unit because of the possible "fading" problem over time. Despite the reputation that LCDs have about poor black levels, I find this set's black level to be fine, living up to its high contrast ratio (even for an LCD). The Aquos line of HD TVs is more expensive than most other flat panel LCDs, but in my opinion, it is worth the extra money. After all, how often do you buy a TV like this? I bought this set through Amazon. They use a professional shipping company that was very nice about delivering the unit and removing the packaging material. The set arrived in perfect condition.

I've now owned this specific model for about 2 weeks and I must say the picture is fantastic.I did a lot of research on the web prior to purchasing this Sharp and I'm very pleased with my choice. My advice to anyone considering purchasing their first flat panel tv: Narrow down your choice to 2 or 3 models and then go to a store and look at it---and not just for 10 seconds. We made several trips to various stores to look at the TVs. We looked at the picture and listened to the audio. This was a big purchase for us so we took our time. Also, keep in mind that the TV's in the stores are not optimally set for color. The stores let us play with the settings to make sure we were happy. Finally, this is a full HDTV. It supports 720p and 1080i.

Poor customer service,

I bought a Sharp Aquos 37" and experienced a problem in a storm that caused the system to freeze. No big deal I thought because most everything has a reboot sequence.Well, I was right but Sharp charged me $175 to do this because someone had to come to the house to do the magic button sequence. I thought at least spending this much on a Tv that even though it was out of the 12 month warranty since this is a software/firmware issue Sharp would waive the fee. Boy was I wrong. Beware of Sharp Warranty.

I ordered this TV on January 3rd from amazon.com. I did not recieve the set until January 17th because the shipping company (EGL), "could not find my phone number on whitepages.com" and made no other attempt to contact me. I contacted them and scheduled an appointment for delivery. When my set was delivered the technician (delivery man) did not unwrap or set up the device because it was not his job. I paid the delivery money for this lack of service. I give amazon/EGL a 1 star for delivery.I have had the LC-37D4U for just over 2 weeks and I have had many power related problems beginning the day I recieved this product. The unit turns itself on if left plugged in. When it turns "on" it is frozen and unresponsive to the buttons on the unit itself and the remote. It must be unplugged to work properly again. I contacted sharp about servicing the unit and they put me on a waiting list for 3 weeks. I have not contacted amazon about returning this product, but I will do so after writing this review. I gave the unit 3 stars because the image produced by the set is amazing and the sound is very good for built in speakers. I will be very happy with the product if the power problem is fixed on Feb 22nd (my service appointment).

I bought a sharp lcd tv from j& r in new york last Jan, after a year and half, when powering on the tv, sometimes works, sometimes not. after unplug in, wait for a while and plug back, worked for a couple months. Send it to service center to checkup, was told that the lcd control board needs to be replaced. when request to get back the replaced lcd control board, was told that sharp does not give back the replaced board, it has to be shipped back, otherwise, you have to pay additional fee to get back the replaced board.. it's rather strange to hear such a lousy policy from any vendor..But, if you do want to get a sharp, better get a long long warranty..

Seriously guys. DON'T buy this Tv unless you want to replace it in two years! This model of TV has a huge KNOWN problem to lose its audio after 18-24 months. We bought this TV 2 years ago and it was amazing until one day the sound decided to shut off and never work again. Sharp has terrible customer service and if you were to get the sound problem fixed it would cost you $300 and upwards, its not worth your money. If this tv didnt become a complete peice of trash after 2 years then maybe I would give it a better score.

OK! I've been saving this up for all the reviews that say that all the new HD TV's are not in full HD: yes they are! Now, let me explain, take for example this TV: it's native resolution is 1366 x 768, which is enough pixels to fully display 720p. 720p is a HD resolution. Now, to display the highest resolution HD the TV MUST have 1920 x 1080, good luck finding a TV under (or over) 40" that can display that. It's not that Sharp and the other manufactures don't want to make a TV that shows 1920 x 1080, it's just reallllly hard to (at lest in sizes smaller then, say, 50"). But if you don't have a set that shows 1920 x 1080, it's all up to the sets image scalar - that's the bit of electronics in the TV that converts the input into something the TV can display - and if the scalar is sub-par than your picture will be too. Talk of pixels and image scalars aside, go to the store where you'll buy your new TV and look at the high-def TV's, than the standard-def, do you see a difference? is it better? do you care if it's not 1920 x 1080? whew! I'm glad to get that off my chest, sorry about all that nerd ranting Jeff, but, I get pretty worked up about that kind of stuff, any way I should get to the review, hu? Well, here it is: It is a really good picture. really. unfortunately, I don't have the pleasure of living with this TV, but, my friend has the 30" version, and in HD it look's...wow, nice, real nice. In HD bigger is better, and that thought was confirmed for me upon seeing this 37" at Best Buy...or was it Circuit City, no matter, the point is that even in 1366 x 768 it still looked mighty fine.

Why is this not full HD resolution for this price?,

Sharp would have had a winner here if they had made the choice to offer full native 1920 x 1080 resolution. Sharps new years resolution should be to offer 1080p on All their monitors instead of tying to trick people into thinking that anything less is state of the art.
