Book Description

London, 1822

William Drake has lived among thieves, bastards and beggars all his life, doing what's necessary to survive. As a young orphan, that included looking after his best friend, Jack Morgan. But as they grew older, Jack took the honest path, leaving Will behind to fend for himself the only ways he knows how.

When an unsavory errand for his employer brings Jack back to London's underbelly, he needs Will's help. It's there, among the alleys they ran through as children, that the love he's always felt for Will returns. As their nights together grow hotter, Will discovers something new about his old friend—Jack's need to serve extends into the bedchamber.

Will has never fully abandoned his dream of escaping London with Jack. But what could the Duke's driver want with a dishonest cheat like him, beyond a bit of rough sex? It takes the gamble of Will's life to find out if he can win Jack's heart…

5.0 out of 5 stars ~ Review by JosieGoodreads June 11, 2014

5 of 5 stars~ Review by JosieGoodreads

Sharp Love is book two in the Gambling on Love series by Ava March. It follows on from All In with the Duke. I say ‘follow on’ as the end of All In with the Duke and the majority of Sharp Love run concurrently, the same events just from two different POVs, so to avoid spoilers it’s best to read the two books in order.

My Review of All In with the Duke can be found at Mrs. Condit and Friends Blog.

In All In with the Duke we got to meet Jack Morgan, His Grace the Duke of Pelhams driver and most trusted man servant, but we didn’t get to find out much about him, that’s because all is revealed in Sharp Love as the story focuses on Jack and his life long friendship with William Drake.

Jack and Will grew up together in the workhouse and the back streets of London. Will using his quick wits and cunning to keep them fed and Jack using his size and strength to keep them safe. It was a perfect partnership that is until Jack walked away from Will into a life of honest service with the Duke, leaving Will behind to fend for himself in the back alleys, Molly houses and gambling halls.

Over the years their paths have crossed occasionally, whenever Jack is on an errand for the Duke and returns to London, and each time Jack remembers why he walked away, how he feared seeing Will dead in a back ally, how he couldn’t handle the worry anymore, and each time he walks away again. This time, with the Duke almost settled with his own heart’s desire could this also be the time for Jack to find the courage to grab his?

I’m a great Ava March fan, I’ve read most of her books but I can honestly say I’ve never met a character of hers that stirred me like Will.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best MM's of this year! August 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There really aren't enough stars here to describe how this book made me feel. So much feeling and sweetness in this story. I can't imagine anyone walking away from this book without a smile on their face. I loved both men, Will and Jack, alternating between both of them as the sweetest most caring characters I have read in a while. Not much happened in the book for most of the book, but when it did it was for justice well served and I loved Jack for that. Will's character broke my heart and I will always remember him for his sweetness towards Jack despite feeling that Jack had abandoned him and left him behind. I've never really felt this before in a book, about adults where the feeling abandonment became the driving force for character building and one where I never want to think about my romance MC's ever being abandoned again, because it was just so sad. Loved this book, will recommend it to everyone!

I really enjoyed the first book in this series so I was eager to pick up the sequel. I got a little surprise when it took place chronologically at the same time as the other story, but with different main characters. It was refreshing to have the heroes being from the working class poor and the story set in the poorer east end of London. The plot was slow to develop, but it was engaging as this 'friends to lovers' romance grew slowly with a few bumps along the way. Both characters seemed to be going two different directions in life so that acted as the main barrier with a few misunderstandings and a bit of danger from the criminal element to make it interesting.

The story opens when Jack Morgan, a duke's coachman, arrives in London on an errand for his employer so he seeks out his best friend, Will Drake, to help him. Jack and Will grew up as orphans together in a workhouse and then escaped the certain hard life with an early death in the coal mines to live on the streets of London to make a better life. Jack was the brawn that kept them both safe while Will was the brains that kept them fed and sheltered. Will had to do things for them to survive that worried Jack and pricked at his conscience. He ended up leaving Will behind when he found honest employment with a coaching inn stable and then with the duke. He saw him infrequently over the years when he needed to come to him for help. Time with Will was precious, but it was hard to see that Will was still making his way by less than honest or honorable means.

Will is glad to see Jack the night his high win at the gaming table nearly earned him a knife in the side and he is happier that Jack has an assignment from his precious duke that sends him into Will's world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but not as strong as the first in the series June 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
*3.5 stars*

I had SUCH high hopes for this story, and while it ended up being very well done, it didn't come close to my favorites list.

The story for "Sharp Love" takes place in roughly the same timeframe as All In with the Duke. I adored the character of Jack in the first story so I just about died when I heard he was the MC of this one.

Part of my problem certainly stems from the fact that I don't tend to like established couple stories. Now, while this story does not involve an established couple by any means, it does involve two men that have a very complicated history together. Jack and Will were best friends, co-dependent friends, with the occasional hook-up thrown in. They grew up together and cared for each other until they parted ways in adulthood. I, more often than not, gravitate towards stories where you see the whole relationship blossom before your eyes. I like first meetings and first kisses, first glances and first touches. I do like friends-to-lover stories, but I prefer the friends to be entirely platonic (no touchy-touchy) prior to the "awakening," so to speak. Therefore, it was harder for me to get into the groove with these men.

What Ava March always does well is her sex scenes. I liked how this was kind of bossier sex (I don't think the vast majority of the people would call this BDSM) and I ALWAYS loooooove when the bigger man is the bottom. I've said it so many times, that is one of my favorite plot devices in M/M! I could have used more pushiness, more dirty talk. I think these two men would have gotten into it if the story was more focused in that direction.

In the end, what dropped this book down to 3.5 stars for me was the back and forths between Jack and Will.
