2.0 out of 5 stars Good until it stopped dead after 20 months' use. First -and last- Sharp
Yes, one year and nine months was as long as this one lasted.

Up until this afternoon, the Sharp R-402JKT was just part of the kitchen, with handy features and hot performance. I mean it heated up stuff WAY faster than most package directions suggested. Popcorn and baked potatoes were just right using the 1-button menus.

We reciever this microwave quickly. My microwave died after 35 yrs. and I was so happy it arrived fast. It is easy to operate and the instructions are very easy to follow. I really like all the features and the pre-set settings are very accurate. The 4 defrost settings are a real treat to me. The demenions are accurate but I didn't realize the wall plug was large so this microwave sticks out 2 inches more in front beyond my shelf edge. My old microwave's plug laid flat against the wall. I am getting use to this and it in no way affects the performance of the product. If I had known it would take up another 2 inches in deepth beyond the listed deminsions I would have purchased a smaller unit so it would fit my space better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love all but one thing, November 17, 2007
This review is from: Sharp R-402JKT 1-2/5-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
I really researched before I bought this microwave. I had owned a Sharp, one of the first carousel type ones, for 21 years, and it still hadn't died, but was slowing down. I knew I wanted another Sharp and had space constraints, so after doing quite a bit of looking, I chose this one. And I am definitely not sorry! I was a bit daunted at first by all the buttons and choices, but the prompts are a huge help, and it really wasn't hard to figure out at all, especially considering my old one had barely any options. The only thing I would change - Sharp, are you listening? is that the door is very loud when you shut it. There are light sleepers in my house, so I find that sometimes, early in the a.m., I have to leave the door hanging open until they wake up! That's the only reason I gave this item a 4 instead of a 5. Performance-wise, feature-wise, you can't go wrong with this microwave.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesomely powerful and durable microwave, October 23, 2007
This review is from: Sharp R-402JKT 1-2/5-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
This product replaced our still working but rusted 1991 Sharp microwave. That microwave and this one are made great. I slam the door in my haste and it takes it and asks for more. I had to get used to how much more powerful this one was than our last. Cooking times have decreased dramatically which is nice. Controls are easy to use. There is a button that you can press quickly cook (one-touch) in increments of one minute. I use this frequently. Highly recommended. I can't see how you could go wrong with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eceptional Product and Value-Best Buy!, November 13, 2007
This review is from: Sharp R-402JKT 1-2/5-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
Our Microwave went kaput and after researching I chose this Sharp model. Spacious, ease of use and high power make it a great selection. The extra food/task specific power settings are great plus the little night light is a nice touch. Outstanding price. All around recommended.

Cold coffee to hot in 48 seconds. This unit saw daily use but very light service. Not a family of five cooking everything in it. A family of one heating up leftovers and coffee.

Today, I'd tossed in some leftovers for lunch, hit the 1-minute button, it lit up, the turnable started to move, the magnetron took some power and... dead.

Black face, no indicator lights, no display, no interior power, dead, D.O.A. Nada, zip. It has ceased to be. This microwave is not sleeping. Power outlet checks good for power in both outlets.

I suspect the magnetron has died and sucked out any interior fuse mechanism that was placed inside to protect against actual fires. So now what?

Cost of the machine averaged over 20 months has been roughly five dollars per month. Not too bad. But older microwaves have been known to last 15+ years, so no excuses as far as this being "experimental technology".

The closest repair facility is 30 miles round-trip, a one-hour drive here in the Seattle area. Labor is not included in Sharp's "extended warranty". Do you want to spend two hours delivering, picking up this item? Do you want to pay for labor on a unit that failed within two year's time of light use? What if it dies again the next day? How long will it take to fix it?

See you at the dumpster, Panasonic coming up.

Just recently purchased to replace a late '80's Quasar Microwave/Convection oven, our "workhorse oven" for many years. The Sharp lives up to it's reputation. Quite a bit smaller, but a nice size for two people or a small family. Fast, multipurpose, good programs, simple to use. Does exactly what it says it will. Simple Users Manual, easily understood. Follow it faithfully. Altogether very nice. We, too, found the noise level of the door, both closing and opening, to be rather loud. You just have to adjust to it. Tried trying to quiet it when it closes and that just doesn't work at all. Don't even go there. Altogether very satisfactory purchase.

I found this MicroWave to be simple to operate - using the automatic settings. It is a bit noisy - but thats a minor issue.

Likes: Good power, nice smooth carousel turntable, presets are pretty accurate, easy to daisychain cooking steps, fairly quiet, the "nightlight" is actually useful at times.

Quibbles: Sorta noisy & hollow-sounding chassis - door clunks open and clunks closed, some of the touchpad buttons could be larger like the Start button, only a single audio signal when done - if you were away and missed it, you wouldn't know without looking at the display flashing "END".

1.0 out of 5 stars STARTS SPARKING after about 18 months use (TWO machines), August 5, 2010
This review is from: Sharp R-402JKT 1-2/5-Cubic-Foot 1100-Watt Microwave, Black (Kitchen)
I bought my FIRST one of this model Sharp R-402JK-T microwaves, NEW not refurbished, at the local Sears, based on the great Amazon reviews.

Obviously, as you would expect, the reviews were all written after the owners had had the machines less than 2 years.... I don't know why I'm even writing this review now, since the model is discontinued...

The first one I bought, lasted JUST SHORT of 2 years working PERFECTLY, until it started lighting up inside "bright like the SUN" with a white blinding light, and making buzzing & sparking noises, and smoking & smoking. We had always kept the inside of the microwave clean, without metal, without "lack of moist food" inside. (Our previous microwave by Amana from the 1980's had lasted TWENTY YEARS.)

I thought maybe the unit was just one "dud" off the assembly line, because this Sharp model had gotten such good Amazon reviews. So I went to the same Sears and bought another Sharp of this same model (which was still available at that time), again Factory New, but this time with the 2-year warranty plan.

Well, it's been only 1 year and 2 months since I bought Sharp #2... we've kept the inside VERY clean, ensured we Never run it "hard" (too long), and never run it without plenty of moist food inside.... and here we go again: It's lighting up like the sun, sparking & arcing, CONTINUOUSLY - even with just a simple cup of water. It's perfectly squeaky clean inside. We only ever use the same microwave-safe high-quality dishes we've always used, going back to the Amana microwave which had lasted us 20 years, and we always made sure there was plenty of moist food inside every time we used it (no "dry running"), and never any metal.

So I'm calling the number for the local authorized Sharp Microwave service center now, to see what they can do for me, as far as getting it fixed or replaced... but I won't be buying any more Sharp microwaves, no matter what the "short-term" Amazon reviews say... I'll be looking for an Amana, or equivalent.... These Sharp's costed about $200 when new; that's about $100 a year; that's just like RENTING a microwave...

I purchased this microwave after my old one died. Now I wish it had died sooner. Quick cook times and I love the short cut keys. This microwave is incredible user friendly and made for use!
