5.0 out of 5 stars sharp microwave oven R-420
Initially I was dubious as to the quality and performance of this unit given it was relatively inexpensive but I was completely wrong! I am extremely pleased with every feature and its performance exceeds my expectations. I am so pleased that I choose this model.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT for Seniors !!
This microwave does all its supposed to do, it is compact and looks nice - but it isn't for seniors or anyone with poor eyesight. Dark letters on a semi-dark background makes it almost impossible for me to read. I understand there is a model with a different color scheme, that would be easier to read, but this was the one on sale, and us seniors are always looking for...

We've used this microwave for about 6 months now. It works great from popcorn, reheating dishes, and thawing meat. I have a large family and it works wonderfully. I would highly recommend it to any family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, October 16, 2009

Bought this a few hours ago at a local store as a replacement for a Cuisinart microwave that died in less than a year. My parents have always had good luck with Sharp microwaves (had one for about 20 years), and this one got good reviews here and on other sites. I love the controls and it's a very "smart" microwave.
My initial test was popcorn. Perfectly popped! Then I reheated leftovers along with frozen chicken nuggets and both came out perfectly. The sensor cook is too awesome. Looking forward to many years of use!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but cheaply made, April 27, 2010

I am just a bit disappointed in this oven. My previous Sharp microwave, which actually cost a bit less, lasted 15 years; I have grave doubts this one can expect such a long run (though given the cummulative inflation of 15 years, the equivalent price of the older unit would now be much greater). The front window and inner window are not glass, but a flimsy plastic that is easily scratched. Indeed, the unit came with a difficult-to-remove sticker on that front window that cost me scratches right from the start, trying to remove it. The plastic covering to the buttons has developed wrinkles in it--this in just about two months. On the other hand, the unit functions supremely well: it has enough power to cook in about 1/3 less time than my older Sharp. And the sensor cook feature is fanTAStic: it makes flawless popcorn without having to stand and watch the cooking process. On balance, I feel I made a wise purchase. I can only hope--given its cheap, lightweight construction--that its life expectancy at least approaches my former oven.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT for Seniors !!, September 27, 2010

This microwave does all its supposed to do, it is compact and looks nice - but it isn't for seniors or anyone with poor eyesight. Dark letters on a semi-dark background makes it almost impossible for me to read. I understand there is a model with a different color scheme, that would be easier to read, but this was the one on sale, and us seniors are always looking for ways to extend our meager incomes. I have a magnifying glass sitting on top of the micro and use it whenever I'm doing something new. I've had it a few weeks now and even a senior will eventually learn where the most used buttons are.
And the unit is light. Manufacturers continue to find ways to make components smaller, lighter (probably saving money for them!) If I was moving it around that would be great, but as it is, it slides over the cart I have it sitting on. Rubber feet with better traction would be nice, I figure I can make a tape loop to put under feet to hold it more securely, but I shouldn't have to.
I haven't tried the sensor cook feature, I learned by the "time it" method and it works fine. Need to read the manual again to see if they have a simple non-sensor button for common things like baked potatoes, etc. But thats me, I don't want to spend a lot of time re-learning things for what used to be a simple appliance.
If the above issues don't bother you, and the price remains good, go for it. It heats, which is all you need isnt it?

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 Star Microwave, October 11, 2010

This is my second Sharp microwave. I bought another Sharp because the old 1987 model lasted until 2005 and was still working when I retired it and bought an over-the-range different brand that quit working in five years. I bought this model rather than an over-the-range simply for the ease of installation. I still use the timer on my old oven. I wasn't shopping price, but this one happened to have the features that I want and it also has very good reviews and it is a SHARP! It sits nicely on the counter.

Pros: I like the sensor, the large capacity - it is big enough to accommodate a 12" dinner plate and anything else one would like to put in it, really. Also like the hot water selector/tab. It heats the water to the perfect temperature for tea. Soft and hard vegetables are cooked to perfection. Haven't tried popcorn yet. Use it mostly for warming food.

Cons: When I use the baked potato sensor, I have to add an additional three minutes afterward for it to be thoroughly cooked. Several of the reviewers said their potatoes were cooked exactly right, and I am wondering why mine don't come out that way. These are not large potatoes, and for some reason they are not cooked as thoroughly and nicely as I prefer.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the oven. Amazon got it to me in record time. It is a SHARP and I fully expect to have this oven for a very long time. Will let you know if I do encounter any problems.

Nice micro.
crappy front clear plastic.
As others have said, you can't get the sticker glue off the clear front without scratching it.
But read the comments regarding that, with a solution also.
It's to soft and flexible.
Otherwise it's nice and works vey well.

This unit appears to be made well and operating the same. I would have given it 5 stars but it is smaller than I originally thought, and I had a larger one to replace. Let's see if it meets the time challenge.
