Sharon Bryan's latest collection, Sharp Stars, is a brilliantly conceived whole, from cover (Hans Hofmann's conversational "Joy Sparks of the Gods") to cover. It's only about the beginnings of life (real, metaphorical, and astrophysical), death (same), and love. How easily I first wolfed these poems down. And yet Bryan writes that rare poem--the kind that not only merits rereading, but invites it. This is why I come to poetry: music, intelligent play, a trip for the imagination, and--dare I mention it--news about important matters. Don't miss "Poetry," one of the best examples of an ars poetica that I've read, ever. This is a book to savor. And keep close.
