SLICK!,
By Mal (Illinois, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sharp UX-B800SE Broadband Fax Machine (Office Product)
This is one slick piece of kit. Quite easy to to setup with a bit of network basics under your belt. Plug in phone line to a spare jack and then a CAT5 cable to a spare router port. I then manually entered static IP information into FAX machine (even easier if you use DHDP) and then setup options on FAX how I wanted it. To add, edit or delete email addresses, etc I then went to internet explorer, typed http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, which is the FAX machine's IP and used the internet based configuration page. Up and running in less than 10 minutes. I use PDF as the format and get pretty darn good quality documents. I used PDF because every computer should have adobe reader installed these days. Admittedly a bit more effort is involved to setup options specific to how you want to use it but I found it very, very easy to install and setup. No harder than any other FAX machine really.
I only FAX a few pages once or twice a week. For large business usage you may need to think twice on a larger more expensive make/model. Pro : cheap price, duplexing, scans quickly, good scan memory size, relatively easy setup (maybe not so for a novice but instructions are clear and concise), don't have to use the somewhat expensive ink cartridges on the fax but have them go straight to email and then I print them on my laser printer ... the list of good points goes on and on and on ... Cons : None so far

doesn't work with SMTP authentication,

This idea a real killer...
but the UX-B800SE is a partial failure. Purchased one but returned it the 2nd day. If your internet/email provider needs the SMTP authentication before sending out email, such as AT&T Yahoo!DSL and many of the major email service providers, you are stuck, period. There's no workaround.

I purchased one in Sams Club. I was hesitant after reading available reviews which were pretty discouraging. Anyway I deciced to give it a try. Out of the box everything was working perfect, connetion to the router was quick, I check IP address and was able to open web interface. Configuration of e-mail service was quick and easy. It is great to have all faxes in the e-amil. I am so glad that I decide to invest some time to try that smart machine.

DO NOT PURCHASE UNLESS READY TO BUY SMTP2GO.COM,

I spent many hours trying to get this to work on Verizon DSL. From what I read the same problem occurs with Comcast. Whatever the mechanics of the problem actually are, on Verizon/Comcast, you will only be able to receive faxes which will be emailed by this machine if you set it up to go through a private smtp server. I found that it finally worked (I was so happy) after I purchased a yearly account from [...]. Then I routed the emails through that server and it finally worked. It must originate from an email registered on your account with [...]. Now that I figured this out, I will not return the two machines that I bought for both my offices and through my blackberry I will always know when I receive faxes, which as a solo lawyer I find very valuable. The fact that they don't tell you all about this up front at Sharp (or offer the SMTP server re-routing) brought my rating for the item down, but I found it otherwise great, after 6 hours of effort to get it going. Maybe you all can save that time up front by reading this.

very expensive ink cartridges,

I bought this fax for home use and it is pretty complicated. Have not used the fax to email yet and probably will not. I barely went through 20 faxes and ran out of ink. Finding a replacement cartridge was not easy, office depot was out so I checked on line, cheapest price was about $33.00 plus shipping ---then I read the reviews on staples about this ink cartridge, Sharp claims over 400 sheets out of this cartridge but reviews say they can hardly get 100 sheets.....so I am returning the fax. Will research to find a more economical one.

This is a Refurbished Product (not NEW as it says). I ordered it and received it today (after 9 days); however on the box it printed Refurbished Product. Opened the Box, it had a paper inside which states that you have purchased a refurbished product. Anyways since I had opened it I started putting it together and found that Ink Cartridge was missing (Read the User Manual, they have stamped with RED - Ink Cartridge Not Included). Furthermore, Warranty Card has another Mark "VOID". It will not work without Ink cartridge. Price for Sharp Cartridge varies from $35 to $100 on Amazon (not sure if it will even work).
Do NOT ORDER this machine. It is not what it says!!! I have not powered it on yet; don't know if it even works.

Switched to a VOIP provider, after they assured me that my fax would work--it didn't. Saw this broadband fax-perfect. I've spoken to people whose regular fax works over the internet-others whose fax machines don't.
This Sharp Broadband fax works flawlessly with Optimum Voice. Cablevision sales dept. just lied. Do a google search before you switch to VOIP-many people have fax issues.

Excellent Fax Machine Once Get It Working,
By
This review is from: Sharp UX-B800SE Broadband Fax Machine (Office Product)
It works like wonder. Operation of sending to email address could not be simpler. Fax is fast, smooth, and clear. The advantages of getting fax in email are numerous. Green to earth, no need to speed money on ink cartridge, eliminates clusters, etc.
The only catch is that you have to get it working, which needs a work around if email provider requires authentication. After a few hours of goggling and a few lines of python, I got it working with my yahoo mail. The solution is to run a SMTP relay as listener for the fax machine, which then sends out the fax (email) out to email provider after adding SMTP AUTH. It is very convenient once it is working. Besides, it is just cool.

Don't even think about this machine if you really want the broadband features.,

Listen to the other reviews: OK as a basic, stand-alone fax, but the broadband function only works for ISPs that don't require POP authentication. It will not work in most places and more and more ISPs are switching, so chances are if it works now, it may not soon.

Acceptable Performance,

We've never used the e-mail/Internet capabilities, but as a basic fax machine this unit works pretty well. Don't believe the advertised life of the ink cartridges, though -- even using every ink-saving feature available, we only get about 300 pages per cartridge.
