War and the creatures of horror stories fit together well in Joseph Nassise's 'Sharp End', a neat opener to a coming series featuring zombies in the trenches and in flying squadrons during World War 1. The story is well paced with no fat, short enough to read quickly but long enough to get its job done and make you want more. It's an easy read and worth the buy for its own sake, especially if you were enthralled by 2000 AD's inestimable comic series 'Fiends of the Eastern Front', its later serial novelisation and the (fairly recent) game 'Wolfenstein 3D'. By transposing to World War 1, extending the timeline of the war and switching to zombies, Nassise opens a realm of new possibilities.

The prequel did fill in some blanks, but it is a rather short read. Not worth buying for the amount of reading you get. But what is there is good.

I enjoyed this story. I had already read the first in the series and love the unique blend of alternate history, zombie and steam punk. If you are a zombie story reader and are looking for something with reasons and a unique feel I highly recommend this series.

Thankfully I figured out that this is a very short novella prequel to The Great Undead War series. It is an intriguing appetizer to the first full entry called "By The Blood of Heroes" which I have lined up to read. Suffice it to say that it is a bit of a tease but succeeds in establishing context and setting atmosphere. And really who would not want to sign up for a "zombie steampunk alternate history" series? It is admirably original to choose the First World War to re-imagine events. And given certain fictional advancements in the waging of war including "corpse gas" we can conclude that it does not end in 1918 and that the meat grinder that was that war will be considerably more costly and horrifying.
