Book Description

March 1921. The War to End All Wars continues, with no foreseeable end in sight. The Central Powers control most of Europe, with only a thin stretch of French coastline still in Allied hands. A beleaguered Britain fights resolutely on, but everyone knows that without the continued support of the United States it would fall within weeks. Even that may not be enough to defeat the brilliance of the Central Powers’ scientists and the advantages their weird science gives to their troops as wave after wave of zombie troops are sent against the Allied front lines...

BY THE BLOOD OF HEROES (HarperVoyager, May 2012) launched a new zombie steampunk alternate history series known as The Great Undead War from internationally bestselling author, Joseph Nassise.

Here, for the first time, is the story behind the story. Follow the hero of The Great Undead War series, Captain Michael "Madman" Burke, leader of Burke's Marauders, in the early days of the war, when the Germans are just beginning their field tests of a new weapon.

A weapon that will eventually come to change the face of the war itself, that will resurrect the bodies of the dead, both friend and foe alike, and turn them into flesh-eating monsters. A weapon that will come to be known as corpse gas.

* The Sharp End - a prequel story introducing the characters and events of the Great Undead War series

* A Timeline of the Great Undead War, identifying major events and military battles

* The first two chapters of BY THE BLOOD OF HEROES, the first book in the Great Undead War series

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharp end. Sharp story. April 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
War and the creatures of horror stories fit together well in Joseph Nassise's 'Sharp End', a neat opener to a coming series featuring zombies in the trenches and in flying squadrons during World War 1. The story is well paced with no fat, short enough to read quickly but long enough to get its job done and make you want more. It's an easy read and worth the buy for its own sake, especially if you were enthralled by 2000 AD's inestimable comic series 'Fiends of the Eastern Front', its later serial novelisation and the (fairly recent) game 'Wolfenstein 3D'. By transposing to World War 1, extending the timeline of the war and switching to zombies, Nassise opens a realm of new possibilities.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, but WAY TOO SHORT. April 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The prequel did fill in some blanks, but it is a rather short read. Not worth buying for the amount of reading you get. But what is there is good.

I enjoyed this story. I had already read the first in the series and love the unique blend of alternate history, zombie and steam punk. If you are a zombie story reader and are looking for something with reasons and a unique feel I highly recommend this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Steam Punk Tease June 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Thankfully I figured out that this is a very short novella prequel to The Great Undead War series. It is an intriguing appetizer to the first full entry called "By The Blood of Heroes" which I have lined up to read. Suffice it to say that it is a bit of a tease but succeeds in establishing context and setting atmosphere. And really who would not want to sign up for a "zombie steampunk alternate history" series? It is admirably original to choose the First World War to re-imagine events. And given certain fictional advancements in the waging of war including "corpse gas" we can conclude that it does not end in 1918 and that the meat grinder that was that war will be considerably more costly and horrifying.

2.0 out of 5 stars should have been free
Ok so its a prequel to the zombie WWI series. Very short and half the download is the preview of the first novel. Not for me, standard zombie stuff and I'm not interested

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough
A very very short prequel that does not do much to establish the storyline, or characters, to entice you to buy further writings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read... but watch out for the link to Amazon at the end
It was a pretty good read & I might want to go on in the series later, but at my timing not the author. I clicked on the link at the end of the book directing to the next book. Read more
