Product Description

Amazon.com Review

With an incredibly sharp picture, the budget-priced Sharp VCA582U lives up to its name. Despite the low price, this unit is a standout with several advanced features. For example, its shuttle dial allows you to manually advance forward and backward through a video--just like pro video editors--without the jerkiness of pushing a Stop, Fast-Forward, or Rewind button.

While the remote control is billed as being universally compatible with multiple units, we had trouble getting it to recognize our TV set. However, programming on the unit itself via its Menu, Set, and arrow buttons was a breeze. The VCA582U contains an on-screen option for programming in English, Spanish, or French using a fairly standard VCR blue-screen setup with basic text.

To test the playback performance of this VCR, we played both an old and new videotape. A much-loved, prerecorded movie handled beautifully, while a movie that had been played only once glided right through the unit. Our tests also proved video and audio quality on the VCA582U to be excellent.

For the environmentally conscious, this unit boasts the EnergyStar logo, ensuring that it meets the Environmental Protection Agency's standards. EnergyStar appliances use less energy than non-compliant devices, saving you money on your electric bill.

Overall, this is a basic machine for those who like to take a "hands-on" approach to their VCRs. We were most impressed by the crystalline picture and the smooth control offered by the shuttle dial.

Pros:

  • Easy forward and rewind via shuttle dial
  • Budget price
  • High-quality performance

Cons:

  • Universal remote may not recognize all TV sets

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good overall, but one extrememly annoying feature..., September 13, 1999

there is no way to reset the counter on this VCR! Even when you put in a new tape, it won't go back to zero. It drives me crazy. Other than that, I'd say this is a pretty good buy. I've had mine for about six months and it still works.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great VCR, January 26, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sharp VCA582U VCR (Electronics)
This is a great VCR. I have had it for several years now and I probably use the VCR for recording or playing something twice a day. It has a super fast rewind, which is fantastic (for when you are trying to make it to Blockbuster by noon).

I just wanted to write a review to say that there is a way to reset the counter, but clearly people have trouble figuring out how to do it. It is rather simple, you just make the display show the counter and then you press the cancel button and it resets the counter to 00:00:00.

It is a shame that people are reviewing this VCR for less than it is when it is them who didn't read the instructions to figure out how to work it. Not to mention, I bought this VCR when I was in college and my other VCR had stopped working and I found it for like $50-60 and this was in 1998/1999, so that was a great price. And it has served me well ever since.

1.0 out of 5 stars A misrepresented VCR, September 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sharp VCA582U VCR (Electronics)
This is a poor VCR for the following reasons: 1. 19u micron head does not provide better quality picture in EQ mode if anything the picture quality is worst. I mean it. It is. 2. its true that the picture is sharp. but the sharpness reveals the "snow" and other distractions of a videotape.
