With its full auto mode, the user-friendly Sharp VL-AH161U Hi8 camcorder enables you to simply point and shoot to capture hours of fun video memories. It also features a picture in picture mode, an extra-large 3.5-inch LCD, optical and digital zoom capabilities, and digital image stabilization.

Lens
With an optical zoom magnification of 16x, the VL-AH161U also has a digital zoom--which works by electronically enhancing the optical image--that can magnify the picture up to 400 times. The digital image stabilization system keeps the picture steady and solid throughout zooms and camera shakes.

Other Features
With its 270-degree variable angle, you can hold the VL-AH161U in a variety of angles to record over people and objects or take shots close to the ground. You can even record yourself by rotating the view screen 180 degrees. The VL-AH161U also features several digital effects (black and white, sepia, NEG) that can be viewed without affecting the original recording.

Sharp's advanced circuitry allows recording down to less than 1 lux (the light of one candle about one yard away from the subject) and eliminates complex lighting arrangements and harsh floodlight glare. The backlight compensation feature also adjusts only the dark parts of a shot to optimal brightness levels, and leaves the bright sections untouched, so they don't become glaringly washed out.

This versatile camcorder uses the Hi-8 tapes which is backwardly
compatible and makes most sense for routine use (baseball outings
camping etc). The large LCD screen and the rechargable lithium
batteries with audio are its major plusses. It has no firewire
capability and hence cannot be sent out for rapid display outside.
Overall, a sturdy, compact product from Sharp.

This is a great camcorder light, compact and useful. The zoom function and pip are definite attractions.

I'm pleased with the camcorder so far. For the price, it has some nice features. The 3.5" LCD is nice and provides an excellent picture. The camera is easy to use and the menus are fairly intuitive. The one complaint I have so far is that there is not a dedicated button/switch for the digital image stabilization. You must navigate through the on-screen menus to find the DIS and toggle it on/off. This is inconvenient and cumbersome while recording. So much so that I think I'll probably never use it. But for what I plan to use the camera for, it works great and is a very good value.
