Review

It was great to know that it wasn't my memory, but a level of distraction that was making things hard to find. Now I have better tools to use which WILL make my life easier... --John Craig, best-selling author Secrets to Creating Passive Income

About the Author

Othniel J. Seiden, M.D.
Jane L. Bilett, Ph.D.

Both Othniel Seiden, MD and his wife Clinical Psychologist Jane L. Bilett, PhD noticed in their practices and among acquaintances that people reaching middle age started questioning their mental abilities, fearing they were headed for Alzheimer's or some other dreaded dementia. The doctors constantly reassured their patients that usually these fears were based in myths.

Myth 1: "You can't teach an old dog new tricks!" NOT TRUE! In fact many things are easier learned now than when we were younger.

Myth 2: Our brain cells disappear by tens of thousands a day so when we're older there's little left. NOT TRUE! Oh yes, we lose cells all through the body and replace them with new ones, a process that begins at birth and continues throughout life.

Myth 3: Forgetfulness is the first sign that something is wrong with your brain and the mind just goes down hill form there. NOT TRUE! Actually, we completely forget very little, but if we don't use certain information for a while we tend to file it away making room for things more important and current to us.

Myth 4: If you think you have a biologic reason for your memory losses you probably have early Alzheimer's. NOT TRUE! People who have a biologic cause for their "memory problems" rarely notice them themselves.

Myth 5: Once your memory starts to go it can only get worse. NOT TRUE! Priority has more to do with our memory than does mental ability or capacity; interests and priorities change. Finally, they put this wisdom down on paper. This book contains the truth of how the aging mind works and how you can keep your aging mind sharp and learn all the new material and skills you want throughout your life.

More About the Author

I do not have a literary background, though I did a year of graduate study at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, my real background is medical. I graduated from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1964 and practiced for 44 years, first as a General Practitioner, and the last 30 as an E.R. doc. I began writing as an avocation to help me unwind after a long day in the E.R. My writing went in two directions, one Historical Fiction, and the other Medical Self-Help, my forte translating medical information into easily understood lay language. In recent years that Self-Help has been more in the direction of Baby Boomer and senior health and emotional problems.
My Historical Novels deal mainly with Judaical, Holocaust, and Biblical History. Most of my books are both in print and on Amazon Kindle. Please enjoy! With over 40 books published by 10 different publishers I've been named Colorado's most prolific author. Google Othniel Seiden

5.0 out of 5 stars Relax - it's not some dread disease..., August 27, 2008
This book relieved my anxieties over what I thought was a failing memory. It explained the difference between memory lapses and those caused merely by distraction! It further taught me how to remedy my bad habits - the ones that were causing my perceived memory problems. What a relief - and what a great tool to help me sharpen my memory. I'd recommend this one - to anyone at any age.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was delighted by the way my memory seemed to improve, May 21, 2008
as soon as I realized what really was behind my 'forgetting things.' Use Sharpening the Aging mind to find out that my memory is still in tact and that my previous 'lapses' were not due to Alzhiermer's, instead due to my pre-occupation with other things. This book helped me overcome this by teaching me a few, very valuable tricks to avoid being distracted when I'm doing something I need to remember later.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple explanation for what's really going on with your memory..., August 27, 2008
This review is from: Sharpening the Aging Mind - Methods, Tips & Tricks to Keep Your Mind Super Sharp (Perfect Paperback)
This book is written by a retired physician and his psychologist wife, both of whom see memory problems in their practice and in their friends on a daily basis. The fear in these people that emerges when they can't remember something they just did is genuine. Drs Seiden and Bilett set out to explain what was going on and hopefully - in the majority of cases, ease the fear because it's probably nothing to worry about. But memory is something that you can improve and live easier and also reduce your chances of getting a dread memory disorder.

The simple explanation of the differences in short term memory, long term memory and immediate memory were so enlightening, that chapter alone was worth the price of the book.
