The winder truly is silent (unlike some others I've tried). It has a really neat way of holding onto the watch by simply pressing a button, although it's important to center the watch. Otherwise the winder becomes out of balance and the winder makes a thumping noise from going too far in one direction. The winding motion is bi-directional and is a very accurate winding motion similar to wearing the watch naturally. I don't think it would make a very reasonable traveling winder though because of it's size and the fact it has no cover to protect a watch in transit. Although if you're traveling with a large suitcase and can spare the room it would be nice to have once you arrived at your destination. Wolf Designs offers some really nice Winding Boxes at very reasonable prices at (...) but I believe they deal with dealers and Jewelers only. I have no problem recommending this winder though. You can always go by a (...)to see one in person. I bought the 3 year replacement agreement just because Sharper Image is so good about honoring them worldwide. I would avoid "cheapie" bargain winding boxes. They are NO VALUE AT ALL. Plastic gears and junky motors that burn up in a few days to a few weeks and an "Oh well..." type of attitude about replacing them. Of course who'd want another one. This winder shows that you don't have to drop a bundle for a name brand to get a decent product that does exactly what it's suppose to do. Sometimes they can be had at quite a bargain at Sharper Image.com/outlet. Although you're pretty much stuck with a 90 day warranty if you go that route. It always nice later on to be able to walk into ANY Sharper Image store and have them replace something right there on the spot just by pulling your phone number up in the computer. And no, I'm not a Sharper Image junkie. It's just once in a while they come up with something that really fits the bill. God help 'em if brushed aluminum and plastic ever get outlawed. Although in this case the brushed aluminum and black leather go really well together. The 6 minute cycle per hour is a good setting for Rolexes and most Swiss time pieces.

I guess I'm just too cheap to spend hundreds on a winder, after all, I just want to wind my watch, not add a piece of furniture to the room. I had passed by this item to purchase a more popular name winder last time around and ended up with a noisy, unreliable unit that died on me 2 months out of warranty. This one is a little "funky" to load and start-up until you get the hang of it, but once you are past that (actually it is so simple that I almost "over-engineered" the first time around), this winder is extremely quiet and reliable. I use it on my Rolex at the six minute per hour setting and it works great (it also fits my Panerai). The only complaint is that there is no cover on the unit so the watch is exposed, but the ease of use and total silence when operating make up for that minor detail. I definitely recommend this item.
