The wine opener was a christmas gift for us, too. We didn't have a problem using it, it was actually pretty easy: just hold the defoiled wine bottle, place the opener over the top, and continuously press the down button until the cork comes out of the bottle. Then press the up button continuously until the cork pops out of the opener. We used it maybe 10 times with no problem, but the motor is now too weak. I don't know if we used it on a synthetic cork, but maybe. The people who gave it to us have one, too, but they didn't know how to use it. We showed them how, and their opener still works just fine. Maybe ours is just not charging fully? We're going to call Sharper Image to see if we have any luck since the website states a year warranty.
**Update: I didn't actually call Sharper Image, but I did discover what the problem was. At some point, we used the opener on a cork that had a wax seal which got stuck inside the opener. I couldn't see it inside at first, but it came out it pieces when I was messing with the opener (pushing the up/down button and swearing at it). Now that the wax is gone, it works GREAT! Go figure. I changed the rating to 4 stars, since the instructions didn't warn against the wax issue.

We received this as a gift. At first, we did not have much luck, but after figuring out how to correctly use it, it has worked perfectly. The trick is to hold the opener straight up, apply some light downward pressure (hold the bottle with your other hand) and continue pressing downward and holding the on button UNTIL THE MOTOR STOPS. The cork will come out of the bottle like a charm. To retrieve the cork, just press the opposite button and the cork will come out. We rarely, if ever, have a cork that does not come out perfectly!

Am I the ONLY one?,

I was given this electric opener as a Christmas present. The first time I tried to use it, the cork didn't come all the way out. Assuming that it was user error, I tried it again on a different bottle. On the second try, the cork came out of the bottle but would not come out of the electric opener. We had to take a pair of plyers to remove the cork. I have tried it two other times and has ended in the same result... plyers. I searched the web and found that there are no reviews on this product. Am I the only one that had this problem?

This product is not supported by SharperImage.com which purchased the assets of the bankrupt Sharper Image. They tell you to return to the store.
The product worked fine for a few bottles. It will not however remove synthetic corks, has stopped removing the cork and generally doesn't work. Get a manual one.

This is an update after having the opener a year. It does work for some bottles, pretty well really. It will keep the cork almost all the time for non cork style corks, you know the foam or plastic ones - it always sticks in there. You can get it out with a pair of needle nose pliers but what a pain. On all standard corks, it sticks about 5% of the time. So I use it very regularly for regular cork bottles and nothing else. Held up good for heavy use of one year.Do not buy this junk. I got it as a Birthday present from my son and was fully pleased with the notion, as I am a big wine drinker. First couple of times, I figure........well it just takes a while to get a hang of it. I have opened or better said - tried to open several dozen bottles of wine over the past 2 months and it has worked 50% of the time - well. The rest of the time, I have to bring out the regular crank model. I have given up now!! So sad!!!

Does not consistently work,
This review is from: The Sharper Image KP-W100 Automatic Wine Bottle Opener, Black (Kitchen)
This wine bottle opener was a gift and I have used it multiple times. It opens wine bottles successfully only about half of the time. The times that it fails, it makes it into the cork but kind of just continues turning messing up the cork, but never pulling it back up. You also have to apply a good amount of downward pressure. I think using something like the manual rabbit corkscrew is sooooo much easier and uses less effort, and always perfectly opens a bottle of wine.

Why- won't- this -work?,
This review is from: The Sharper Image KP-W100 Automatic Wine Bottle Opener, Black (Kitchen)
Takes forever to charge (if it does at all) and then rarely has the power to extract the cork. Save your money and buy a cheap, simple corkscrew at the grocery. A complete waste of time and energy.

So I don't spend a lot of time writing reviews, but for this hunk of junk I'm making an exception. I received this as a gift, and while it looks halfway decent and slick (quite plasticky though) it falls short in a couple HUGE ways: 1) it basically needs to be left on the charger CONSTANTLY to have enough battery power to open a bottle of wine - if you charge it, then put it away for a couple weeks, then it's almost completely discharged when you want to use it, to the point where you can't open your bottle and have to put it on the charger for 30 minutes to get it ready to go. If you don't mind having the charger attachment and cord dangling around on your countertop constantly then you'll be OK, but otherwise I'd AVOID this product; 2) if you happen to break off a cork a centimeter or so into the bottle, as I did recently, this crummy thing (even with a charged battery) will not operate to dig in and get the cork out, there's some type of safety that stops the corkscrew from turning if there's nothing right below it to grab onto. So you need to have another option to open the bottle in that case. In summary, there must be dozens of other products in the same price range that do the job that this thing is suposed to do, only much better. Cheaply made, fails in a couple of critical ways for me. Anyone remember way back when Sharper Image actually made quality products? No? Yeah, neither do I, it's been quite a while I know. Do yourself a favor and buy a different product. Thanks for reading!

This opener is not user friendly. It is very hard to work. I purchased this image about a month ago and have not been successful in opening a bottle of wine.

Dysfunctional wine opener,
By honest reviewer (Arlington, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sharper Image KP-W100 Automatic Wine Bottle Opener, Black (Kitchen)
I have to agree with the other reviewers -- I just received this as a Christmas gift. The first time we used it, it worked but was really awkward to use (you have to hold it perfectly straight and place a lot of downward pressure to get it to work, plus hold the bottle very securely to keep it from spinning -- tough to do with only two hands), it's noisy, and it takes up a lot of counter space. The third time I used it, the cork got stuck inside the opener and I couldn't get it out (as other reviewers have said). Somehow, the next day it worked and released the cork when I tried it again on a whim. A product like this should make it EASIER to open a bottle of wine, but it does the opposite. I would not recommend it to others.
